..so I would like some level headed people to talk me out of it with a clip around the ear and some advice please!

My current pc hasn't been updated since 2011ish when I bought my GPU - a 6950, and its age is really starting to show.

Right now it has a Q6600, 4GB RAM and the 6950 all lead along by a copy of Vista begging to rest.

Originally I was thinking along the lines of AMDs 8 core FX's or maybe the I3's to keep costs down, but I love a bit of Planetside 2 and the more cores the better it seems.

Monitor and peripherals are ok and there's some other bits I'd like to keep as well if possible:
Case - Antec P182 - was viewed as a decent case back in the day, hopefully it still is?
Soundcard - Asus Xonar D2 - think it's the D2, it's the PCI not PCIe version
PSU - PC Power & Cooling Silencer 610

I hate to say it but the only re-usable part of that is probably the case.

Many would still opt for an i3 for lower price systems.

Did you have a budget in mind?

Say around 800? I could afford to go upto 1000, but I prefer leaving something back for the rainyday fund.

Only the case is salvageable? I had doubts about the PSU but assumed its 600w would be enough. As for the xonar, would that be driver issues/conflicts with newer OS's?

The xonar works fine with win 10 and it's still a very good sound card.

You may have difficulty finding a decent board with a legacy pci slot though.
