Hi there,

I'm trying to get an old junker PC at work into working order again. The main reason is for it to be standing by ready to replace any workstation that may die or pack up on me. The client will then have at least something to work on in the short term - uptime is essential where I work.

So the HDD died on this old junker, and I have an old wiped 10Gb ATA-100 HDD that should work in it. It's a Pentium 4 1.7Ghz 845 Chipset (so only supports ATA-100) with 256MB SDRAM. Essentially what I want to do is use nLite to slim down a full Windows XP Pro install, ideally with Service Pack 3 installed too.

Typically, what size would an nLite'ed XP Pro install be? Would I be able to trim it down to fit on this ancient 10Gb drive and still have a little room for a few documents, open office and an anti-virus? In all honesty, I can't even remember how much a full fat fresh XP Pro install would take up on a HDD as I'm running Vista at home on all my machines.

Any help would be appreciated

Cheers

Well the full copy I have zipped up for nLiting is 533Mb and I reckon a decent nLite session could see you get to at least 200-250Mb if not sub 200Mb with a proper clean out of what you wouldn't need.

Edit -It is about 590Mb in all but you can get rid of lots of that stuff and really shrink XP down. :)

Edit - Just put SP2 and SP3 in and then removed the rubbish. Gone from 634Mb to 191Mb.

just nlited a SP2 XP pro install for a mate and its sitting at 1.5gb with open office nero wmp11 Acrobat reader and a whole host of other progs.

my last nlite installed disc was about 370mb installed size, had to keep wireless gubbins in as it was for my laptop

my windows partition is 4gb, it has 1gb ram, and i leave hibernation on (so that uses 2gb for just pagefile & hibernation, and i have a few apps installed on it too

namely coreavc, ffdshow, media player classic, winamp lite, firefox, 7zip, o&o defrag, ccleaner & imgburn

do you really need av?

steer clear of bloaty programs like nero, wmp and acrobat

my iso size is about 90-120mb, depending on wireless, dhcp & whether it's pro or home

I used to get an nlite XP Pro + SP2 installation below 400MB. A 5GB partition was enough to install Office 2003 and all the apps I needed for work.
