I have a 4G tariff with O2 and in a 4G area. I did a sim swap a few days ago but no luck, only 3G. looking online people have said to go to Settings > Mobile data enable 4G, but I dont have that toggle. All software is up to date.

A guy I work with has exactly the same issue with O2 4G. It has been fine for ages and within the last week he hasn't been able to get connected. They did a sim swap for him and it didn't make any difference. (This is Coventry btw)

Ring up O2.

I'm on Giffgaff and switched to a 4G package sometime last year on my iPhone 6, after months of never receiving 4G in my hometown (which was currently undergoing rollout) I thought it was just bad luck due to my city not having it implemented fully yet, then I went on a trip to London - still couldn't receive 4G in the heart of London.

So I contacted Giffgaff and turns out they'd forgot to enable 4G on my account from there end. Could be the same situation for you, worth a try.

Should look like this.

I had this issue with Tesco 4G (same network as O2) on a 5S - updated carrier settings made no difference, even a new sim didn't work. Never fixed it.

I had this when I switched to O2. Took a few calls but in the end someone noticed something wrong their end and they solved it.

The settings can look different from carrier to carrier.

On three it's under Settings -> Mobile Data -> Mobile Data Options. Then there's a setting for 4G being Off / Voice & Data / Data Only.

Three are promoting it as a way of getting a signal in places where there are blackspots, in their case it helps inside large buildings as they've got some low frequency on 4G so the signal penetrates better. That said I've not seen it working yet, my iPhone 6 still drops back to 3G when it gets a call...

I think long term it'll allow the networks to retire the old 2G networks.

I said long term. It's not going away anytime in the next 10 years in the UK from what I've heard.

The US carriers are being somewhat more aggressive.

For what's it's worth I had this issue when I renewed my contract, turned out I'd accidentally selected the blackberry option instead of the apple option at checkout (sim only), quick call to O2 and it was sorted in 24 hrs
