No 5.1 sound in windows 7 programs

I have just installed windows 7 and I can get surround sound in my audio setup but out of 4 programs i have tried, for video and music i cant get any to work in surround sound, is there a button i have missed at some point?

Its just onboard realtek, i do have a cheap 5.1 sound card if it doesnt work but i dont want to put it in

Well apparently this is a well known problem with the realtek, they havnt made a patch for it yet, which is quite bad seen so windows 7 has been out for quite a bit now! They only way ive made it work is by turning it onto 4 channels and moving a speaker socket around, just not getting the middle channel now but its not so bad seen so i have 3/4 speakers at front,
