My father came to me last week and said that the audio had stopped working on his system, typically he said he was doing nothing at the time, just put his headphones down came back and it wasnt working so thats no help!

Checked it over, nothing obvious seems to be up, nothings muted etc.

In the bios the audio controller is enabled, its an Asus P4 board with onboard AC97 realtec audio.

Has been fine for over a year and then just stopped working.

Ran norton systemworks and windoctor, which corrected some unrelated problems but didnt help.

Reinstalled the drivers with the latest versions for no effect either....

Anyone able to help with anything else i could try!?

Thanks.

Some obvious things to check.

  1. Loose wire
  2. Wrong port

If you open say an MP3, do you still see audio playing?..... or does it refuse to play saying no audio device?....

If it continues to play, its most likely something silly, break in the wire (try another headset, speakers) or just a loose connection.

Maybe something is muted or the wrong playback device is set, check the audio levels and make sure the relevant ones are not muted via the audio settings in the control panel.

Forgot to say, have tested with different headphones, is definatly in the correct port.

No errors when playing any media, shows up in device/hardware manager as working correctly and when you run services.msc it shows as having windows audio started!

If it is XP - roll back to before the fault

If still no joy = Blown then.

Go to the nearest dodgy retailer and buy a 5 sound card - unless your father is an audiophile.
