Friend went away for 5 weeks, came back home and plugged his PC in and pressed the powerbutton and nothing happens.

The LED on the motherboard lights up green no problems - no PC speaker hooked up so no beep codes. But nothing fires up, the PSU, none of the fans - pressing the button does nothing. He did say that there was a slight burnt smell when he tried to turn it on, but like dust burning like when you've not used your toaster for a while. When that happened, the symptoms were the same - nothing span up, no fans or anything.

Sadly it's an AM2 board and I've got nowt to test it with. Tried removing all the ram and turn it on to see if it complained or anything, but niente. Also the wizard who installed the motherboard used a mix of screws and plastic plugs so I can't remove the motherboard without sacrificing a goat or something first.

Any ideas? Tempted to think dead PSU as it looks to be a cheapy one. Sadly no spares to test with.

Remove the ATX connector and link out pins 13 & 14 with paper clip, I would remove all power leads from components and just plug a fan into one if the molex connectors, if the psu starts ok then bit investigation required, ie see if you jump start the motherboard using s screwdriver on the power switch connector.

Sounds like PSU or CPU to me. Any power failures while they were away? clocks reset etc. Had a situation where the MB LED was on but turned out it was the PSU. No number LEDs on the mobo I guess?

As always hard to test without some spare bits :(

RJC - what you suggest sounds dangerous, so I'm in.

Can you link me to a page where I can suss out which are the pins 13 and 14?

Was going to suggest taking the PSU out of the machine and putting it in another - however you've already come to the conclusion that its dead :)
