install it all properly (ie ram in right slots) and it turns on, mobo lights up, fans spin (cpu, case fans, gfx). But it wont get past the initial boot (ie it wont get to detecting ram/gfx. I can have no ram in and it wont beep, I can have no power to gfx card and it shows no diagnostic led's or whistles)

I take it mobo is dead?

nope. no picture displays, monitor just sits there flashing :P

card would be ok cus it isnt 100% fan like it was when i had it die over chrismas... and no diagnostic led's

Is this a new build or has it just started happening?
If its a new build, check you have the 8pin CPU power connectors going, as well as the GPU power leads.

Disconnect any PCI cards, SATA and IDE drives and see if you get anything then.

It could be the graphics card, might be worth trying to test it in another machine.

Check the RAM. I have a very similar build to yours, and my computer wasnt posting either. It turned out that it was the RAM. I had put it into the wrong slots. Try just using one stick of RAM, and keep trying the different slots. Mine were originally in a black slot, when they had to be in the red slot.

If this fails. Take the motherboard out, and make sure you have connected it to the PC case properly. A few years ago, I failed to use those funny screw things that lift the motherboard up slightly - so it was short circuiting. Best of luck mate, I know how frustrating it is!

lol i did that with my first build. mobo didnt die initially but did after 6 months. will never make that mistake again.

have you tried clearing the cmos? some asus boards reqiure one when you first put it together. mine did although its not the same board lol.

ram came this morning, cpu is spank new, mobo is used (although i trust who i got it off so thats not an issue) and my gfx
done as everyone has said (its sat on my desk as a bare mobo) ram is in the right slots (tried wrong slots and only one stick etc)

Also it wasnt posting without anyram either (but it says it wont in the manual so..)

Only thing that might have caused this is i knocked the battery thing and it bent slightly, (it sticks up next to the ram slots, right next to my psu... clever :D but its still connected etc.

Getting an RMA sorted out now so :)

cant actually see/read cmos anywhere onboard or manual though O.o

Just realised I have exactly the same spec as you. The only problem I had, as I have said before, was I put the RAM in wrong and it was not posting. Best of luck with the RMA - the system is great when its working :)
