Hi

A friend of mine has just got a Linksys WAG354G v2 wireless router to use with his Bt broadband.

The problem is that the router requires a username and password but the letter he has from bt only gives a username and says the password is automatically authenticated by his phone line.

The router won't work without a password so what are other people using?

Thanks

It might be a password to enter the router settings rather than a connection password - try resetting the router by pressing in the reset button on the back, else check the router documentation for the password (it may be admin, admin)

I had a problem with this the other night where my customer forgot her BT password, after 40 mins on the phone with BT they finally told me that it is authenticated on their domain and not the password which basically means that as long as the user name is right you can put anything in the password box to stop the router complaining, all i put in hers was a full stop and after a re-boot it worked perfectly.

:)

You can put almost anything in as a password. I normally just use a full stop to stop the router complaining. (Have also had this suggested from a BT support monkey once as well)

thanks all. it seems you are right and you can put anything you want in the password box!

Can someone confirm that a password is not needed to connect to BT Broadband as long as a single character is entered to fill the password field?

Also is the username the email address? [email protected] etc?

It's just that I have to install several routers for different BT Broadband users these next few days and none of them remember what their password is or if there ever was a password.

Cheers.

Yep that's right. Ours is a BT Voyager 205 (which actually doesn't complain at blank passwords) but using a password in it still lets it connect.

And yes, it's [email protected].

BT Adsl connections are linked to your phone number, you dont need a username and pasword to logon to the service the line should syncronise automatically.
