NO-CD Cracks - Illegal?

as jokester said, it's the code modification that's the illegal part.

Using 3rd party utils such as alcohol 120% is not illegal afaik, as there is no code modification taking place. :)

Now things ram patching and things like that are a grey area....

what's the deal with the "you're allowed to make your own backup copy" thing? Is it true? And if so what's the point when your backup copy of a game disc generally won't work because the copy protection things know it's not the original.

You're allowed to make your own backup copy (from earlier legislation), but you're not allowed to bypass copy protection to do it (from the later legislation).

I always try to look for a no cd/dvd crack for all the games that I legitimately own - I have kids with sticky little fingers to like to press the ickle buttons on my pc that pops out the 'cup holders'. So I use these cracks only as a means of protecting my investment in a game.

Yes it does, actually.

It's in this act that it prohibits the use of copyright circumvention technologies, which includes no-cd cracks.

It prohibits use of cracks? Where?

296 "Circumvention of technical devices applied to computer programs" applies to cracks. Under 296(1)(b) it is illegal to distribute them, but there is no mention of them as being illegal to download or use.

I use Vista x64 now and there are a few copy protection problems with games. For example, I had to use a no-cd for GTR 2 since the copy protection system doesn't work properly in Vista (and Gamejackal doesn't support Vista x64 yet :P)

I believe no one could seriously argue against copy protection circumnavigation in a case like this but, as always, the law is written for the minority of naughty people who steal the games.

I am not going to worry about the methods, as long as I can get my games working.

What you do in your home is absolutely up to you. As far as Im concerned, you can crack or copy anything you like SO LONG AS YOU HAVE BOUGHT THE ORIGINAL. And even more importantly, you arent making copies for others or allowing others to use the software.

If there is any smallprint which forbids you to crack your own game that you purchased for your own use, then **** them! Besides, how are they to know?

Having to hunt out the right DVD/CD for old games means for me that I can't be bothered to play the game period. That means I can't be bothered to buy their expansion packs a year later, and probably means I lose interest in all but the most main-stream sequels. The sooner game companies pick up on the fact that most people don't use no-CD cracks and end up just plain not playing their games then they might make more money in the long run. Releasing a patch might be the way forward, but it has to be done pretty soon after release, and so far my experience is this doesn't happen.

so what they're basically saying is, if you're playing a game you own without having it inthe cd tray. you're commiting a crime!!

Do you write your own no cd cracks?
