My other half got a new Pixel 6 today, but it didnt come with a charger - her old Huawei charger doesn't seem to be working with it, so it's essentially useless until we're able to find a decent quality charger.

Surely such a fundamental missing component should be noted somewhere on the product info? How do they expect people to be able to use their phone without being able to charge it? Any recommendations on a usbc charger which isn't going to burn down the house?

An "optional" accessory which essentially makes the device disposable if you don't buy it?

I'm not paying £25 for something which should come with the phone, might just send it back as it's clearly not fit for purpose :p

Obviously i'm joking, but seems a pretty devious way of getting more money out of the customer for something which should really be expected to come with it.

Seems my Quest 2 charger works, so can make do with that for now, but definitely not a good first impression!

I think you'll struggle to find any new phone from the big manufacturers that comes with one these days

So reduce ewaste by making phones disposable. Just buy a new one when the battery runs out. Got it

Perhaps your other half didn't buy it from the google store as when you add the phone to the basket it brings up a list of optional accessories which includes the charger where it clearly states that it isn't included with the phone.
These newer higher-powered chargers will be more expensive to make. By not just "throwing in" a charger (which some people may not actually need), they can keep the price lower and reduce unnecessary waste in that drawer full of old chargers that many of us have.

No, she got it from a network on contract.

The claim that it reduces unnecessary waste falls over somewhat when you cant use an older charger anyway (not like its 10 years old, its from a 2 year old P30 pro)

The pixel phones come with a cable as does the 18w charger but not the 30w charger. For the sake of £15, 5W more power and the certainty of compatibility with the pixel 6 (IE full PPS support) I'd get the 30w Google charger. I don't see the point spending over £550 on a phone and then going tight on the charger.

The counter argument to that being you dont expect to spend over £550 on a phone only to find out you have to spend another £20-30 to be able to actually use it for more than a couple of hours

The customer wasn't forced to buy the phone. They should do their research.

Is it unusual to expect an electronic device to come with a suitable cable to plug it in? Every other phone i've ever bought in the past has come with a charger, as did my laptop, monitor, TV, car, router, table lamp, etc. (in fact i think this is probably the first device I've bought which hasn't) so explicitly checking if it came with one never crossed my mind, in the same way as i wouldn't check if the screen was included or if i needed a soldering iron to actually put the thing together before using it.

Lesson learned obviously, but still seems a poor omission on the product information page

There's no reason that charger shouldn't work. Any USB charger from the beginning of time will work on the phone although obviously it may take days to charge on the original low current ones.

If it's not working then it's not Google's fault.

If not Google's then who's fault is that theirs is the only device which wont charge from the multiple USB C chargers we already have in the house? I've used that particular charger on a p20 pro, p30 pro, anker earbuds, steelseries headset, dualsense controller, quest 2, Nintendo switch, and the pixel is the only one it doesnt work with. The only one which actually works on it is the quest 2 charger, so its clearly extremely fussy about what it charges on. Which is fine, but if that IS the case then the environmentally friendly argument is nonsense, because it wont necessarily work on your old charger

And on a side note, all these chargeable devices, be it phones, shavers, toothbrushes etc should all now be PD USB-C compliant since PD supports a wide range of voltages.

That would really cut down on e-waste and would mean everyone would one in their homes.

Yeah, that's fair enough, that way everything should be compatible, and everyone's happy.

For the next 3 years until the next standard comes out and we can chuck out all our otherwise perfectly functional old tech chargers and buy another new set. But its definitely to do with cutting down on waste and nothing at all to do with making money ;)

When you say not working, do you mean it doesn't detect the charger at all? I have various older chargers in the house and the ones that don't support USB-PD defaults back to 10W charging on my 6 Pro. Even the PC at work with super slow 5W charging still gets picked up by the phone.

it doesn't detect it at all, doesn't even register anything has been plugged in - neither the charger from my P20 Pro or my partner's P30 Pro, I could understand if these were very old chargers or cheap 3rd party ones, but they are the original Huawei ones and only a few years old. Maybe it's just a quirk with the Huawei ones, but still could have been easily avoided.

I can't hold Google completely responsible, as the network (ID) should really also have an advisory notice on the product page or when processing through the checkout. Ultimately not exactly the end of the world as I've got one coming tomorrow, but still very frustrating.

How strange, I'll try a few other cables, cheers!

If its just the cable then they could at least have included a USB A-C cable in the box along with the C-C one, although curious what Huawei have done with their cables to make them not work with it
