Ok this is the situation.

I was first insured from 2004-2005 after which I received 1yrs NCB.

I got insured with a different company in 2005, obviously declaring my 1yr NCB, but at no point whatsoever did they ever ask me for any proof of the 1yr NCB.

I now have got insured again recently and should now have 2 yrs NCB. I rang my previous insurer and they said they can only send me a certificate for 1yrs NCB because thats how long I was insured with them. I told them I already had a yr NCB prior to that but they said well since they didnt receive it they can only issue me with 1yr. But at no point did they ever ask for it, I would have been more then happy to send it to them. Anyway I thought ok, and I received the certificate of 1yr NCB (2005-2006) from them.

I now have 2 certificates of NCB (1yr each), ones from 2004-2005 and the other is from 2005-2006.

BUT... my current insurer does not recognise that as 2 yrs NCB. They said they can only take my NCB from my previous insurer, who only gave me 1 yr. They said that I have to contact them and they should have firstly asked for proof for my original 1yr NCB, and then they should have sent me a 2yrs NCB certificate after the policy expired. What the hell is going on?

Sounds like your old insurance company messed up when you took out the policy...every time i have had insurance they have always sent forms out for me to sign and return along with my proof of NCB.

I've started two policies with Norwich Union, and neither of the times was I asked to prove my NCB.

I will be on the phone to them tomorrow because im not happy at all. That being the first time I ever had any no claims, I had no idea that the next company has to request proof from you.

Ok this is getting more confusing now  some companies ask for proof and some dont?

My girlfriend (1 yr no claims from diamond before) has had 2 policies with NUD and me 1, at no point have they ever asked for proof of no claims, just assumed they would in event of a claim....

I'll be very interested to find out the result of this as I'm moving my policy in September...

If the rate you've been paying for the past year was comensurate with 1yr NCB then surely the original contract you signed will mention this, in which case you've got them over a barrel, even if they didn't ask for the proof.

Or have you just spent a year paying the no NCB rate?

Can you not use your insurance certificate from 2005-2006 as proof of your previous 1st year no claims as it will be stated on there?

I have 2 original certificates of no claims, one from 2004-2005, the other from 2005-2006, both from different insurance companies. The company im insured with now can only accept my NCB from my previous insurer, thats it. They acknowledge though, that I have 2 yrs because obviously they have the proof

I'm going to ring my previous insurer up tomorrow and let them know how i feel, especially if it turns out that I wasted a year, and here was me trying to build up my damn no claims

Some companies don't ask for proof because the bigger companies actually have a mechanism in place for passing that info between themselves. Usually your only asked if your previous insurer is not part of that scheme.

So don't be getting excited thinking there are a list of insurers who will just give you 5yrs NCB with no evidence lol.

As to the original poster, your renewal certificate for last year of policy should say 2 yrs NCB, if it don't then you were paying for insurance at a higher level than you should have been and I'd argue you were due a refund due to their cockup. If it does say 2 yrs NCB the renewal notice can be used as proof of NCB just as a NCB certificate can.
