No connection on 2nd line

I've recently moved to a new house and I've got the net set up on my downstairs phoneline.
I also have an extension of the same line upstairs. My gf is going mental with me having the computer down here and she wants it moved upstairs.
However I can't get any connection up there. I also can't get the phone upstairs to work when I am on the net. Any ideas why this might be and any possible solutions?

But the phone works when you're not online?
What connection is it? If it's ADSL, filters? How are you extensions wired (a diagram might be useful)?

In advance of my artwork.....

The phoneline comes in downstairs. There is a socket on the wall. There is another box that has a wire coming from behind the socket. This box plugs directly into the socket. The downstairs phone (and filter for the net downstairs then plugs into the box). There is another socket on the wall upstairs for the extension.
If the wee box downstairs is not in place (ie the downstairs phone is connected straight into the wall instead of via the box) then the upstairs telephone does not work.
I will try and provide a drawing soon.

A little odd, but from the sound of things you need to leave everything exactly how it is when the PC is downstairs, just unplug the router from the filter and leave it there then upstairs plug in a new filter and connect the phone and the router.

Sorry - I forgot to mention the most fundamental part of the story :o - the net only works when the filter is connected directly to the wall. ie when I am on the internet the wee box has to be hanging loose doing nowt. Because the wee box is no longer being used I cannot connect anything (incl phone) upstairs. I can see no reason why I can't connect the internet using the wee box downstairs since to me it looks like a simple straight-through connection

So if you leave the filter in the master socket and plug the little box into the filter ADSL does not work?

I was being a n0000b. Not even going to embarrass myself by telling you what I was doing :o
Such a fundamental error that it would not help anyone else by exposing my foolishness. Just need to find the 2nd filter (
The plastic thing? I thought that was junk. I think I might have thrown it out
) and all will be well.
Thank you.

np, I can promise that whatever it was I've heard a lot worse before :)

No need for further disclosure though just go and enjoy the DSL connection again now you've got it sorted.
