Hi guys, ok so i got a phone call from my brother saying that his net connection was down(VM) and could i have a look,so i went over, checked all settings etc. but couln't get it to work, (my laptop wouldn't connect either)so I checked with VM but they said there was no prob at there end and it was prob the modem(which was 6yrs old)and that they'd send a new one in the post.

New modem arrived, set up mac with VM,laptop now connects but the tower still says limited/no connectivity. So I think to myself maybe the onboard Lan ports broke? so I insall a pci lan card, disable the onboard Lan and reboot.Still get limited or no connection!

By this time I'm getting a bit anoyed so I bring the tower back to mine and try my VM connection.still the same!!
as the computer is only used for surfing I decided to reinstall Windows XP as a last resort but it still says limited or no connection!

If anybodys got any ideas they'd be more than welcome as I've run out

thanks,this is what it says.

Were you connecting your laptop wirelessly or with a patch lead? Duff patch lead perhaps?

Hi wonko, I used new ethernet cables just to make sure it wasnt that, and the laptop now connects but the tower doesn't.

I don't know anything about the VM modem/router I'm afraid, but it possible that it has DHCP disabled. If your laptop were configured with a suitable static IP and gateway etc. it could explain it.

Edit: If that isn't it, what happens to the LEDs on the router and network card when the patch lead is plugged in? Do they light up showing a connection?

Dont forget to power off the VM Cable modem for over 60 seconds before swapping to each machine, the modem will remember only the first device connected to it during power up - so in effect you cannot 'hotswap' it.

both the router and the network card show connected,in fact i'm using the modem right now to type this and I just swap the cable between towers.the settings on both computers are identical as i have them running side by side.

So I take it you have a cable modem -> router -> pc all via ethernet to each other.

If so uninstall the security software on the machine having issues (for diagnostic purposes) and reboot, if still no joy open a CMD window via Start -> Run (run as admin if vista) and type 'netsh winsock reset' press enter, then type 'netsh int ip reset log.txt'

The first command will reset winsock and second will reset TCP/IP - reboot the system and retry, post back if it works or not :)

OK I guess from what's been said that it is a modem with one RJ45 port rather than being a full router, so DHCP being disabled probably isn't it.

Can you explain or find a link to your VM modem and any other routers etc. you're using in between?

Worth doing what Rabtech suggested re winsock / tcp stack but if you've reinstalled xp from scratch it seems a bit unlikely or unlucky. An overenthusiastic firewall would have been my next suggestion.

If it's not those, increasingly random thoughts and questions are:

Speed / duplex incompatible between network card and modem (e.g. one set to GbE and the other won't support) (unlikely if leds come on?)

Might sound stupid but are you sure that your laptop is definitely using the modem? (no chance of a wireless connection confusing things)?

Have you done a power down and restart of both pc and modem before connecting them?

What does control panel / networking say - anything interesting?

What does ipconfig/all say on your laptop when it is connected?

Hi Rabtech, I've got one cable modem with a direct ethernet cable which I am swopping between pc's (it works fine with my pc as you can see)the other pc is my brothers and is usually connected the same way direct to the cable modem.

There is no security software on the other pc as i've just reinstalled xp home on it.

I've just tried your suggestion, but no luck i'm afraid.

the laptop definately works with wireless off(I havent got a wireless router anyway)and the ip comes up normal.

thanks steve

Okay,

1) Power down cable modem
2) Connect ethernet cable to machine having issues
3) Wait 2 minutes
4) Power on cable modem and wait 60 seconds
5) Retest Internet Explorer

By the way I take it the Windows XP you installed was service pack 2 or later, otherwise you'll most likely be infected with msblast or one of its variants very quickly.

YESSSSSS!!!!!

right, for a start,Robtech i appolagise because I missed the post about not being able to "hotswap" the cable modem,I think you posted this as I was writing a reply to Wonko,so I tried that and it worked untill I rebooted and then stopped again(weird).

Anyway I have rebooted several times since then and it now seems to be working again(hooray)

So I'm not sure if it was something one of you guys suggested that fixed it or the reinstall of XP and me not realising I could't hotswap the modem.Anyway I'm going to take it back to my brothers and see what happens.

Thanks again to all for the help and I'll let you know what happens later.
