No display problem on new configuration

I plunged and bought the following to start the workings of a gaming machine:

I also got the Tuniq Tower 120 with it.

I tore (well carefully took out) my old kit from the case and spent a whole afternoon cutting my hands (i always nick myself while i'm in a case!) assembling the new gear.

Everything booted up great, installed Windows and whole pile of other stuff including most drivers. Everything was fine.

Bam, next morning i turn on, my computer makes a beep to say "i've posted ok", but no display. I strip the case and try to isolate the problem, switch graphics card, single memory, etc...nothing, nada.

by chance, i plugged in my old VGA cable (VGA - > DVI adapter included) to the card as the cable is still connected to the monitor. And "wayhay" we have display. So i'm thinking it's a PSU issue, there is not enough power to the system or something for the DVI. However, i have read that it's an issue with the DVI and there are workarounds. Something to do with drivers?

Not a huge deal as i have display, but kind of makes my great digital screen a little obsolete. Any ideas if it's the PSU? It only has the 4pin plug to go into the mobo, and in the instruction manual it does say it's best to use an 8 pin.

- Alienware case
- Samsung SM226BW 22" Widescreen LCD Monitor
- XFX 6800 GT with Artic Cooler (i know!! I'm going to upgrade soon )
- Tuniq Tower 120 heatsink
- DVD-RW 16x Pioneer
- 3.5 Floppy
- PC Power & Cooling TURBO-COOL - 510-ATX-PFC PSU
- WD 200GB SATA drive

Anyone any ideas if i should upgrade the PSU (especially since i'm thinking about a 8800 GTS 512MB upgrade)? Or should i leave the PSU and the "no display with DVI" issue is caused by something else?

Hi,
so last night (didn't have a lot of time to test much), I plug in the DVI into the 2nd port of the graphics card. I boot up and the screen recognises the Analogue signal, as soon as it gets to the Windows XP login screen it switches to Digital and Nvidia's control panel recognises the digital too, prompting me settings/rez etc...

Anyway, so in DOS, it's analogue and in the Windows OS it's digital!
My monitor let's me switch from analogue to digital but i haven't really played around with it. What's really strange is it's not picking up the DVI?!! I'll check again tonight without the VGA cable, or using the monitor to switch over signals etc...

I'm still wondering about the PSU though? Is it a big problem that my PSU (which is pretty old now), doesn't have a 8 pin Mobo power cable?

Yeah it needs an 8 pin power connector (as well as a 4 pin molex and the standard connector). The PSU has a 4 pin. The manual does state this is ok but to "follow with some regulations etc" it is recommended to use an 8 Pin.

ok, so i unplugged the VGA cable, booted up and the screen recognised the signal. All is ok.

Got round to installing Windows Updates and one of them was an update to the screen's driver.

So i guess i don't need a new PSU, that's good!
