No good multi-purpose monitors?

I'm currently using a NEC MultiSync 20WGX2, which I've had for a long time (5 + years?) and thought it was about time to step up in size (or few sizes), so I decided to come back on these forums to get back up to speed with monitors. Having a brief read through these forums it seems as though there is no multi-purpose monitor that will fulfil all activities? Or have I got this wrong?

It seems as though that if gaming is one of your hobbies, that you will need to get 120Hz TN panel and for everything else an IPS panel is ideal? So do people actually buy 2 monitors for different purposes? One for gaming and another for web browsing/watching movies etc?

Just because there are now 120Hz options doesn't mean the 60Hz monitors we've been using for gaming for years are suddenly completely unusable ;)
But yes, you can't have the best from two worlds in one monitor, either compromise or buy both.

If you want a monitor somewhat similar to your own (IPS) aimed at gaming, the Eizo FS2333 should be available sometime soon I guess.

Frankly I would keep the 20WGX2 for now and either get a TV for gaming on or wait for newer monitors because the newer IPS screens are actually WORSE than the 20WGX2... Yes they are bigger but other than that they are worse image quality... Worse screen coating and IPS white glow on the new screens. (meaning that all dark scenes and black areas have a white glow over them which sort of completely ruins the image quality compared to the NEC which does not have this problem) I have a 20WGX2 also and after trying a couple of 24" screens from HP, Dell etc. I just kept the NEC and got a seperate TV which I use for gaming most of the time.

Need to wait for a new technology because IPS does not have enough contrast and TN is just a bit poor really in terms of image quality. I would reccomend getting a 40" Sony/Samsung SPVA TV or a plasma for gaming on and keep the 20wgx2 for competitive FPS gaming etc. until something significantly better actually comes out.

In theory yes I do have 2:
Gaming on a monitor
Movies on a TV.

I'm not really too fussed about the the colour quality on websites as its the content I'm more interested in.

I have a TV and a monitor... 20wgx2 and 40" SPVA

Pretty much all games on TV - Higher contrast ratio and size is just far better.
Monitor - Counter strike that is about it.

Wow, I didn't realise that monitor technology has progressed so little over the years. I do love my 20WGX2, the colours look fantastic! I probably need to think things through as to what to do now in that case! I guess the answer is OLED, but that still sounds like being years away still!

Thanks Axeia, I will keep an eye out for that one.

What about the colour reproduction on gaming though? Isn't that important to you?

As a general point, it seems to be such a pain in choosing a monitor (infact its an impossible task without making some compromises). I remember going through this when I last got my NEC MultiSync 20WGX2! Seems as though monitor technology is stagnating really! I wonder if there is anything exciting on the horizon that can shake things up (OLED seems to be taking forever to come into fruition).

Yes OLED is the only really interesting technology....

Until then IPS screens are the same / worse as your current screen, TN panels are worse and VA panels there are hardly any and they are not great for gaming.

The only options IMO would be wait for OLED or buy a gaming TV to use for games and films etc. You could spend £500+ on a large sized IPS screen but they have low contrast and are for professional image editing etc more than games and films.

Some TV's have decent input lag and response times as well as high contrast and good black levels which IPS is very lacking.

Aren't there any decent 27inch glossy IPS screens? Apart from the Apple Cinema (which is ridiculously priced!)

Yes the Hazro screens and also the imports off ebay such as catleap etc. Personally I would get the Hazro though.
