Hello all,

I bought a new citroen saxo 16v 3 days ago and it has just started to over heat. It keeps hovering on the top line of the heat display and goes over then drops back to the top line.

Also i have no heat coming into the car from the fans.

The fan for the radiator is working fine so im a bit stuck. Infact im useless when it comes to cars hense this thread.

I was going to buy some radiator flush to see if any blockages of dirt might be causing problems and then add some new coolent to the radiator.

Does anyone think this would make a difference ?

The water is upto max for the rad at the minute so thats no issue.

Thanks in advance.

where did you buy it from, privately or from a dealer ? if you bought it from any sort of dealer id be taking it back straight away and not bothering to touch it. Dont give them any excuse to claim that you've caused by problem by trying to flush the radiator etc..

post edited because i just realised you cant buy a saxo brand new, because its been replaced by the C2 :D

Private sale.

For the air lock there will be a bleed valve somewhere. I know on an E36 its on the top of the Rad.

Thermostat might be buggered, stop shouting HGF Everyone !!

The amount of posts I see nowadays with everyone shouting " Omg its the headgasket " is annoying...

You any good with a set of spanners, the thermostat should be easy to remove and you can leave it out and see if the car overheats without it,

DOes the thermostat run the needle so i know its hot ?

Sorry but im daft.

Right, the cooling system of the car is a big loop, The thermostat closes below a certain temperature to make the loop smaller ( That may not be 100% correct but its the easiest way of explaining )

When the thermostat is closed the water heats up quicker, with the thermostat removed it takes the car longer to warm up, But when the thermo breaks and gets stuck shut the car will overheat..

Does only one side of the radiator get hot ?

ill have to check when i next run the car.

Is it worth me flushing the rad and refilling with new coolent to see if it helps ?

No it's not.

It's either the thermostat is not opening or the water pump has failed.

If it was a head gasket then the heating would still work.

It's possible that it has an air lock so check that first. Then do as the earlier post says and take out the thermostat to see if it runs ok. Be aware that without a thermostat it would take longer to warm up. If it still does it then I would say that it's the pump.

Either way, don't let it get that hot or you will have a blown head gasket/warped head in no time.
