Stand down chaps, all fixed, just thought I'd post about it. Few weeks ago I had F54 and F28 error codes on my Vaillant boiler, saying ignition unsuccessful. I was able to reset it by turning the boiler off and on and then pressing the spark ignite reset button. Last night same error codes but I couldn't get it to fire this time, nor this morning. It will show on screen that it attempts to ignite it a few times and then it goes back to the error codes. No hot water, arrgh! You realise even more how important it is to have hot water when it's not there. You can't really do much without it.
I called the gas engineer that installed my central heating system 8 years ago, he laid all the pipes and installed the boiler (did a good job) and he was going to come round today. On the phone, he reckoned it would be some lead or the pcb. I thought it might be a dirty electrode not sparking.
Meanwhile, another engineer recommended to me that I'd left a message with earlier this morning called me back and came round straight away. He specialises in Vaillant and from me saying I was once able to reset it he said it'll almost definitely be the gas valve. He replaced the gas valve and it's all working perfectly now. £160 for the valve and charged £90 for his time. Only at my house for 20 minutes. We're in the wrong job!
But if the other guy had come to replace the pcb, it would have been a lot more expensive. Funny how two gas safe engineers can come up with two completely different diagnosis. But clearly it didn't need a pcb.
