No IDE - what a joke!

I've bought a MSI P965 NEO-F and now a Abit AB9 and both these boards fail to use any IDE device properly. I am TRYING to install windows from a bootable disc e.g. 98 SE full so I can then use my XP upgrade disc once that is installed to upgrade. But I keep getting this annoying error about how there are no drivers for my cd-rom drive and then it quits the set-up - restarting the pc.

I have googled everywhere and found no solution to my problem. At first it was the hdd so i bought a SATA so then it detected that. Now the problem lies with my dvd drive because that is IDE... So does this mean I have to spend more money and buy a SATA dvd drive? I can't even find a decent place that sells these either.

This jmicron crap on the 965 is a joke. And even more of a joke when you have spent soo much money on building a new pc and none of it working.

you don't need to install win 98 first.
just put the xp disk in and it will be fine.
during the installation process it will ask you to verify your 'upgrade' disk by inserting a previous windows disk.

not sure if it will help but it could

Try turning off any SATA or RAID capabilities in the BIOS while installing onto your IDE harddrive. This was an issue stated in the Asrock VIA880Pro DUAL-VSTA 775 boards manual.

if youre looking for a decent and cheap SATA DVD writer then overclockers have:

Samsung SH-W183 18x18 DVD±RW Serial ATA Dual Layer ReWriter (Black) (CD-076-SA)

i got one, and for £28 its pretty good :)

My xp disc for some reason will not let me do it that way. It only works within an OS.

I'm using a SATA hdd atm, as my IDE just simply would not be detected. I'm stuck with my IDE dvd drive which is the next IDE issue.

I have tried disabling sata and raid etc, but then my SATA hdd will not work. I could however try my IDE one again with those options in the bios disabled but I doubt it will make much difference - not to mention a considerable performance hit with 2 IDE devices attatched to one cable.

thats the main reason im not buying 965 no proper support for ide . you spend a fortune on ddr2 , mobo , gpu and cpu. If thats not enough you got to buy new hdds and dvd writers/players

*** A RIP OFF

I don't understand the problem. I have a P965-DS3 and have had no problems with IDE devices at all. I am using IDE DVD/CD-RW drive and hard drive with no issues at all.

I guess that probably doesn't help too much but I wouldn't be put off the 965 chipset by a problem that may not exist.

LOL

P5B has IDE, it works, whats your problem?

Im buying a SATA DVD-RW anyway as I broke the last drives bay and inside will be neater.

i agree snapshot but it dosnt help my cause , on top of mobo , cpu , gpu and ram im going to have to buy a sata drive and shell out another 40 quid to turn my 2 ide hdds into external drives nice

is it not becurse your Win 98 is not supported anymore that you got problems with the ide/sata's ? Not sure
I must say i don't use Ide hardware anymore as i have brought sata's drive's like above ( Samsung and a LG) to use with my Hdd's I think the why sata works is so much better than Ide ports/Cables and that But can understand that it is not funny where you stand.

There are other options but, I agree, not zero cost. OCUK sells the Akasa Serillel for £15 which will convert an IDE drive to SATA and I think this is the way I'd go. It's also still possible to buy PCI ATA/133 cards for around £20. I agree it's an irritation but is it really a noticable amount on top of what you've already paid?

IDE DVD and DVD/RW, SATA HDDs. Seems very sensible to me and works well on my DS4.

Yup what ill be doing, got 2x IDE hard drives, and 2x IDE DVD drives at the mo, but the DS4 only has the one IDE, and im getting one with my Conroe tomorrow, so im just gona use the IDE for my DVD drives still, and just buying a SATA hard drive as well, or i could just use SATA to IDE converters and still use my 2x IDE hard drives, but i cant be bothered, may as well just buy a SATA hard drive as well as they cheap enough. :)

EDIT: Scrap that i found it ohhh i may get 2x of those and keep my 2x IDE drives instead. :)

EDIT AGAIN: Infact scrap that as a SATA drive is only gona be about a fiver more, once you add the delivery charge to that. :D

Technology moves on. This time its drive connectivity.

I used to have two 9Gb SATA Ultra-3 HDs, I got a 120Gb IDE.

Oh god no!?

OMG NO! they killed win98 and ide! dude as already said technology moves on
sata is a lot faster than ide cleaner looks on the inside with the cables.

so what is the problem here? there is no problem with the 965 chipset i own 2 motherboards using 965 and i'm using an IDE dvd-rom on both with no problems.

live with it there is no rip-off most probably lack of knowledge

The problem is, with only having a Windows XP upgrade disc, I have to use windows 98. Now, my new concern is that even after my new sata drive arrives am I still likely to have problems all over again loading windows 98?

I'm not sure why you don't just boot from your windows XP CD? If it's because it is only an upgrade disc supplied by dell or some other company like that then you'll have to buy a fully licensed copy anyway. It won't activate on your computer.

Windows 98 will most likely not support SATA drives. I've never heard of it being used with them anyway.

You could get a win98 bootable floppy disc and format your IDE drive to FAT32. After that the boot disc should be able to recognise boot the IDE harddrive and the CD drive. Hunt around for a windows 98 boot disc that has cd drivers with it. Make sure it has fdisk as well but almost all of them do.

That is the point I'm making. The windows xp disc is not bootable because it is an upgrade disc and I have no OS on my hdd.

lol so I will probably have to now purchase a £60 odd full windows xp disc now.

I have an XP upgrade disc too, and I can install XP directly from it (It just asks for a valid 98, Me, or 2000 disc to be inserted for verification).

Set the BIOS to boot from CD, then press any key when prompted.
