No Idea what do i need

I have been asked by a friend at work to help with a wifi setup for his new laptop.

Now this is were I am lost his brother signed up to Bulldog but was kicked out of the house and took the stuff that came with the package.

My friend only has is laptop and the service to the house but no hardware.

Please could anyone tel me the hardware needed and if possible an all in 1 modem/router as cheap as poss.

Also how would this be linked up, would I first link the modem to the phone line and then configure the wifi to the laptop?
Any tips would be most greatfull.
