hmm ok i have a freezer 64 and a 3800+ with crap contact i think (48c idle on one core, 38c on the other!) so if i cut the IHS off, will it still seat ok? its a clip one unfortunately. if not is there any way i can 'make' it seat ok?

Apparently it is quite hard and not advisable to cut the IHS off the cpu. You can, on the other hand, lap it so that it has a much smoother and less uneven surface.

Can make quite a big difference in temps especially, like in your case, the IHS is quite uneven.

the IHS doesnt look uneven when i take the CPU cooler off hence why i want to take the IHS off as i believe the difference in core temps means that the IHS isnt seated right on the core and hence not allowing sufficient cooling.

i've read the guide and seen the pro's and con's so i'm not blind to the risks but i know it says it's very limited in what you can do with a cooler that clips on as opposed to bolting on.

I am sure his IHS is only siliconed on and not soldered to the Core like 5200 ? /5600/6000's

If the IHS says 2001 on it it is not soldered, I think it says 2004 if it is soldered.

it's 939 so it's not apparently. only the AM2s were soldered on.

i'm not fussed about the process but i need someone with an arctic freezer to say if it can be done and fit afterwards?
