Hi,

I've got a problem with having no internet connection for about a minute after startup. I'm using Windows 7. On the network symbol in the taskbar, its shows a blue circle and then a yellow ! We had Virgin broadband installed yesterday and I'm now using a Netgear WNDR3700.Its probably unrelated. When we were on ADSL I was using a Draytek 2710Vn and could get on the internet within a couple of seconds after startup. Any suggestions as although its not a major problem its a little annoying having to wait.

If you've changed networking hardware and it was fine before then the hand of logic points squarely at the new box. What is the IP address of the netgear?

How would I go about finding the IP address of the Netgear? Sorry, I'm not that good at networking.

I've had a look at the Windows network map and that shows it as 192.168.1.1 The Draytek had the same IP address, is this likely to be causing a conflict?

You could try resetting everything, a good full power off, and siwtch on items in turn, modem first, then router, then PC one at a time.

I have vnet and I do get online within seconds of loading, on any PC attached to the router which is in turn attached to the cable modem.

Does your PC get its IP address automatically from the router? It could be that your router is a bit slow in assigning an IP address to your computer. If you go to Control Panel > Networking and Sharing Center > Change Adapter Settings. Right-click on your LAN connection [will be the one listed as connected if there are several] and click Properties. Then click TCP/IP v4 and click Properties again.

If both IP and DNS are set to automatic, it might be worth setting up an IP address manually

[Any IP between 192.168.1.2 to 192.168.1.254 shoul be fine - assuming you have no other computers on your network. Something like 192.168.1.200 should be well clear of any other computer. The Gateway address is that of your router - 192.168.1.1. You can also point the DNS to your router.]

Once set up manually, see if connecting is any quicker after a restart.

Thanks Sirius, I had a quick go at changing the addresses and it worked.
