Im posting about my cousin's PC (my old pc). It has IE, firefox and netscape navigator on, but none can reach the internet, and I dont know why.

I have checked ipconfig /all and everything is fine, ping google.com works and I have flushed the dns and deleted all history and NAV 2007 has scanned the PC to no avail. What *really* gets me confused is MSN still works (but IE, etc doesn't). Creating a new user account makes no difference, and neither does kicking it!

The PC is an XP SP2 machine connected through a USB wi-fi dongle to a router. A laptop uses the same router and has no problems, and Im stumped for what to check. Any suggestions please?

Just a thought, but has the router got a list of trusted MAC addresses. I've found previously that I could connect to a wireless router and got an IP etc but no net connection. Probably isn't this since MSN is working but worth checking perhaps?
 
Reboot the router, if it still happens unplug the router for a min or two. Sounds like HTTP traffic isn't being allowed. It's happened to me before.
 
Try going into a dos prompt and typing:

telnet www.google.co.uk 80 and hit enter
you will see a blank screen, type get and hit enter
You will now see lots of writing on screen, this is effectively what a browser does when it gets a webpage.

Try looking in tools and internet options, connections and lan settings to make sure a proxy server isn't specified, or if it needs one, that its the correct one for your ISP.

Next, download a program called HijackThis and run it, do a system scan and post the results here. It is possible you have an adware proxy installed.

Does he have any firewalls running? It's possible he's set one to disallowe web traffic.

Another thing he should check is that his provider doesn't require him to use a proxy server.

Definately nothing to do with the ISP as the same network/hardware has a laptop that works fine. Some form of filtering of the traffic on the router, now that might be worth checking. Thanks for the idea K.C. Leblanc
 
Been and played today for about 4 hours and solved the problem.

Norton 360 was altering all http traffic (adding random stuff onto the end) so the servers out in www land couldn't understand what was requested, hence no internet (gave error messages of "http\1.1 bad request" and "bad request (invalid verb)" incase anybosy has similar problems.

Thanks to all who replies/gave some thought.
