Just on channel 5, a news report of the new rules on artificiall light at night time.

They said its in the interest of astronomers and people who get affected by the light at night time. Lights should be switched off at night time, otherwise owners could face a fine.

I'm sorry, but i feel this is such an idiotic move, and i am glad that the authorites have so much time on thier hands to worry about such petty stuff.

So i am guessing this will have no impact on crime?! I'll excpect rape, violence and burglaries to rise at night time then :(

But having said that, i guess the best advice would be to stay indoors at night time?!

Would it not be best to try and combat crime, which is rising, rather than worry about light?!

Ah well, guess the upside is more stars at night, which is so much more impportant.

It isn't rising. Visible crimes (such as fights in town when drunk etc) are rising but overall it's going down :)

But surley switching lights off will increase such "visible crimes"? I.e. more easier for a car break in?

Well, if honnestly the UK is safe, and is ready to go dark at night time.

Then why dont the star loving hippys go to a park or an area outside a residential/populated area with £1000's of equiptment at night time?

Keep the cities and streets lighted for saftey. And go to a field to look at stars.

Ps, i have a street lamp outside the front of my house, its annoying, cant someone switch it off?!:p

Should have been like that ^ sorry!

In my mind personally i think darker areas is just a breading ground for crime. Just my thoughts anyway.

And a lack of experiance on my part, is never living in an area with excessive light, so would not know how bad bright lights can be. (living in areas like St anns, Radford, and my good home town Rugby, which when the sky is clear at night i can see the stars)

Having seen what darker conditions can result in, is the whole reason why i feel that there should be light at night time.

I guess if you live in a safe area with less or no crime problems, switching the lights off would not be a problem.

I don't think the security lights are too big of a problem except when they are either too sensitive or angled up at peoples bedroom windows, i would like to see orange free cloudy sky's not just to see stars, i think it looks horrible to see the sky orange when its cloudy, why can't they sort out some sort of street light sensor network so that when a car or person comes along the lights light up a certain distance ahead?

It would cost money! Idealy, LDR's connected to each lampost that controls the one ahead.

Cant complain too much, the UK is a better place to live than other contries! If only we got a few things right!!
