NO-IP outage

Was thinking of just getting a static ip from plusnet after this, only costs £5 one off. Anyone else pay for a static ip rather than DDNS?

£5 one off? I'd take that in a second. BT don't even offer it.

I could then just make static DNS records and not muck around with dynamic dns and cnames

You can log in to www.noip.com

The following domains are working

ddns.net
webhop.me
serveminecraft.net
ddnsking.com
onthewifi.com

Just create a new hostname, login to your No-IP account and click on the Hosts/Redirects tab. Click a “Add a Host”. Type in your hostname and also choose one of the working domains above.

Make sure you update your router or whatever is auto updating your ddns to the new host name, ie hostnam.ddns.net

Ive just done mine, it all works

Some of their domains have been taken over by court order, by Microsoft due to some of them being used to spread malicious code. Everyone on a domain thats been taken over is down at the moment. The remaining domains are unders ddos at the moment.

A message from our CEO

As you certainly know by now, on Monday control of our most popular domain names were seized. As a result, millions of hostnames have gone dark and millions of our users have been put out of service.

We have been throwing everything we have at getting you back online with the least possible delay. For legal reasons, we have been restricted from reaching out to you, but we simply cannot stay quiet any longer. We are very close to a resolution and we will update you with more information as soon as we can.

We hear your overwhelming support on social media and would like you to know that we share your frustration. Thank you so much for your support!

I have a Static IP address from Plusnet, One of the many reasons I went for them over BT and Sky. plus being able to use your own router easily. For the one off fee it is a great addition. why other providers don't do it is beyond me.

Clearly an operation by the US government to secure all details of all NoIp users and build a network of all their forwarding etc.

The heck does MS have anything to do with policing an independent DNS provider? And why did they feel the need to reroute and log ALL requests to the root domains through their own NSA data centres? Surely they were just specific registered subdomains which belonged to the criminal's networks?

The fact is, if you're using no-ip, chances are you're serving something, and with Operation Minerva and dozens of internet infiltration operations currently on going, they want to know exactly what information you're serving to their subjects.

Think about it. Without the layer of No-Ip, a government would need to serve individual court orders to international ISPs to obtain details of individuals serving things from dynamic IP addresses. With No-Ip it's just means infiltrating one company and they get a whole chunk of personal information relating to a huge share of internet activity. They now know exactly what IP address you have been assigned by your ISP and they know in real-time. Previously, they would have to submit individual court orders highlighting the date and time of the alleged offence, try to convince a judge, and then the ISP would look through their logs and provide them with the details of who had that IP at that time. Now they have a huge live-database of your account and what IP address you're using.

If you have a no-ip address expect to be probed heavily by security services from now on.

Paranoia aside, and a tl;dr to a point - what worries me more is that MS have the power to seize top level DNS records to meet their own ends.
