Just got off the phone to a REALLY pleasant guy at orange about a problem with my Sony phone.

Had a really good chat with him and asked him about the rumours of Orange getting the iPhone in October. He said that Orange had sent an email round saying that the iPhone is NOT coming to Orange in October and there are no plans for it in the immediate future.

A bit naff but at least I can be content in my O2 iPhone.

Of course this is not gospel.

O2 have exclusivity until 2011, but there is a break clause in the contract where it can be cancelled / renegotiated (not sure which) at the instigation of either party at the end of 2009.

There was never any chance of October this year.

Besides, if you think that O2s 3G coverage isn't great, wait until you try Orange.

Also if anyone thinks that the iPhone is going to be cheaper through another network, it ain't going to happen; the revenue sharing contract which Apple demand will push prices up with which ever carrier gets it, particularly as Apple are on a percentage. Apple don't want discounting because their share will be smaller.

It's certainly not like that around here. Every network has a 3g coverage around here.... except o2. They don't have a single 3g mast in the entire county. If the iphone was available on any other network I'd have bought one by now. Instead I'm going for the N95 8 gig on T-Mobile.

However where I am O2's 3G coverage is perfect. I don't think any network can claim perfect 3G coverage. It will be nice when it's possible to buy a 3G device without having to worry about where you can use it, but that seems to be a distant dream.

I read that when ofcom awarded the 3g licenses they stated that all the networks must reach 80% population coverage by December 2007. o2 didn't reach that but have done now. As for extending beyond 80% I have no idea. Every networks 3g rollout seems to have stalled.

I've still got zero 3G coverage from any network where I live which was one of the reasons I ended up going for the v1 iPhone.

I think percentage of the country in terms of land covered would be a much more useful feature than population, at least then they can't really ignore the more remote areas. And let's be honest, if you're in a densely populated area there's probably WiFi around. These things are most useful when you're in the middle of nowhere.

If you want wi-fi you've either got to go and pay for a mochafrappachino or hang around on the street outside the shop. I want decent speeds whilst I'm moving about, same as people in less densely populated areas.

Concentrating on population rather than area gets you the most happy people for your investment.

Right what's the crack with Starbucks Wifi now? They're all Tmobile Hotspots right, so do you now have to pay? Using Safari just brings me to the Tmobile homepage every time.
