So having come to the end of my ISP contract i went to look if we hd LLU, but no, no LLU providers at all, only ADSL

in this case, does it matter what ISP we go for? im guessing the speed is going to be the same no matter who we go with? [which is terrible by the way]

God no! ISP's pay for connections with a certain amount of bandwidth back from BT's network to their own, performance is down to how much they oversubscribe these connections. Cheap ISP's like Sky Connect oversubscribe so much that service is almost unusable in the evenings.

Premium ISP is a must on market1 exchanges, ideally get an "office" package for increased upload and priority to get around any congestion issues at the exchange level.
I went with the Xilo Office 40GB option at my parents, it's about £28 pm inc VAT, but you get unlimited off peak (and off-peak time starts at around 8pm). One month contract too.

I did not know this, at the moment we have talk talk, I'm not exactly sure who operates round here but with talk talk throttling is terrible

on a good time 150KBps, but usually 56KBps

but 28£ per month is a lot

Yeah, it's much more than the competitors, but you're still only talking about around 50p a day for a connection that doesn't make you want to slit your wrists in the evenings. It was an easy decision for me.

ill have to have a look around.

can you call up various companies and get a RELIABLE estimate on sustained speed before you get connected?

If you log on to your router and check what downstream sync you get it will give you a good idea, as they all provide service by same means. Can then view table half way down this page on Zen to see max download supported.

You could run BT Speedtester site (will need to enter you connection details to perform test). And relate details to table in previous paragraph.

not sure which figure im looking at, heres the info from the router

ADSL Description
ADSL State Show Time
Data Path Interleaved
Operation Mode G.dmt
Bandwidth Down/Up(kbps) 2944 / 448
SNR Margin Down/Up(dB) 10.0 / 17.0
Attenuation Down/Up(dB) 53.0 / 31.5
Power Down/Up(dBm) 18.0 / 12.0
CRC Down/Up 28165 / 209
FEC Down/Up 30179 / 275
HEC Down/Up 30822 / 300

is the figure im after 'bandwidth down'

We were on O2's non-llu, with variable speeds during the day and "Unlimited" bandwidth (which meant 40GB/month).

We're now on Plusnet, which is cheaper and gives us full speed all day (8Mb as we're close to the exchange).
Downside is 10GB/month peak-time limit however it's got an Unmetered off-peak. We manage to keep within that 10GB/month despite my daily gaming habits and then I get to go nuts after midnight.
I did try and get my Dad to go with Xilo but he wasn't willing to pay the extra to fund my peak-time bandwidth interests, which is fair enough.

may have to have a look, the 10GB package seems the same price as talk talk who we have atm, the speed checkers all say 2mb is the fastest we will get however
