Hey everyone, I received my new MBP today and it came with Lion (:D). After setting it all up etc I looked through the box and there isn't any Mac OS X install disks... I bought a MBP in 2009 which came with Leopard and that came with OS X install disks. Do they not include these with Lion anymore? If, for some reason, in the future I wanted to do a fresh install of OS X how would I do this now?

Thanks :)

There is a recovery partition on new Macs... You hold command or something like that at bootup and you get a recovery setup thing.

Yep, it's option/alt key to get that. Has a recovery partition and if for whatever reason your hdd dies it can do it via an Internet recovery method. I would personally prefer to have a USB stick with it on spare though.

CMD-R is what you hold for the recovery partition and if you fit a new hard drive then it'll connect to Apple and download the OS for you.

As I've bought an new 13" Air with Lion on it am I entitled to install that to my iMac as I would have been if I'd paid the £21 and been able to install that copy of Lion to multiple macs? If so what's the technique for this?

No.

Shame, Mr Goody Two Shoes here so I'll wait until I can get some more "buy 1 get one half price" iTunes voucher offers. Cheap skate at times too ;)

Edit: Is this a bit inconsistent of Apple, I seem to be able to install the upgraded Garage Band, iMovie and iPhoto that have come with Lion but the app store want me to pay for the OS upgrade. These upgraded apps are the '11 versions, I was under the impression if I wanted to upgrade my '10 versions I would have had to pay before.

Recovery partition, eh?

Another step towards getting rid of optical drives, though as long as people want to rip CDs, I can't see it actually happening.

Apparently Internet recovery is only for the new airs and minis and not the MacBook Pro's. It's suggested you make a clone of the drive with superduper or carbon copy cloner.

Seems a bit short sighted by Apple so expect a solution soon.

According to the popular apple rumour website looks like Lion USB keys should be available via Apple Care for those who buy a mac that came with Lion pre-installed and doesn't support the Internet recovery feature.

I have just been on the phone to Apple Support as my OTA failed. They say the USB sticks for lion come out two [2] days ago. I was trying to blag one for free but the rep said these sticks won't work with new MBA's.

They are pushing OTA OS install badly. I have on the other hand spoke to the rep who says once the OS is downloaded for the first time it is available to create a USB boot [Build 11A2063]. The representitive is calling me back tomorrow to assist with this. I will update everyone ASAP with results.

There should also be an app bouncing around the net which can generate a Lion disc. Google it. I saw it on a gadget site this morning.

For Macs that come pre-loaded with Lion, can't you re-download the installer from the MAS and create a bootable installation disc that way?

I heard there was a way of option/command clicking the purchased icon, which would let you redownload it?

You don't need to install an app. All you need is the Lion installer and disk utility. Creating a bootable USB/DVD is trivial.
