Just heard from a friend that the empire in Swindon has closed down

Not heard anything else yet, but the stores are apparently closed and staff currently uncertain of the future.

Hopefully this isn't right...

Not sure mate :(

I might nip out at lunch time to go see if they are indeed closed, or if someone has the wrong end of the stick - maybe an elaborate hide and seek (I'll win if I lock myself in) :D

I knew they took on some stores in the South West/South Coast last year, and considering they gained Ducati and Aprilia in the Swindon branch, I guess that's the result of closing the new branches down.

Part of me is now thinking "ooooh cheap leathers".... fat chance though!

Apparently it's true - they've supposedly gone into administration!

This is from one of the employees here in Swindon, not sure why they'd lie, unless they themselves haven't been told the full picture.

Seemed like business as usual the other day.

They're up the road from where I work, I'll nip out and check in 5 minutes...

That has proper made me miserable, what am I supposed to do with my weekends now :P

No other good bikes shop around here... closest is probably Bristol which is to far.

Tell me about it! Wonder if there's anyone to buy them up and make a go of it?

Proper pants :(

I think they just grew to quick... if you think about how many stores they opened in such a short space of time and the fact they took on Ducati / Aprilia recently. Who knows...

It's not the shop I will miss so much, its the social aspect. It's a cracking ride there and when you get there you can be sure to find plenty of fellow friendly bikers and have a bacon butty whilst having a walk around the place.

My thoughts exactly, almost word for word (on both points).

Sad loss really. Wonder if BSB have lost their main sponsor with this too?

More from the rumour mill - one of the co-owners had apparently done a runner (not sure if that was with the money?), might explain the sudden change I guess.

Lets hope there's another owner to buy into the business!

Oh wow. I'm from Swindon and a woman I used to work with was close friends with the owner. I go past the Swindon shop every day as well.

Same here, I pass it every day on the way into the Techno trading estate, and it used to be my local haunt when I lived in Swindon - bought all my bikes and kit from them, with the exception of the Daytona and my XR1100 lid.

Really nice staff, not overly helpful - usually as you had to track them down mostly, lovely store though, modern, fresh, massive, and a real hub for bikers from all over the place.

It'll be a real sad loss if the empire is allowed to fold, I hope there's someone out there who buys into the brand and keeps it going; maybe sells off some of the stores to keep things rolling on...

Now who have we got in Swindon... Art Deans, and Triumph.... think that's it really, and Dean's seem to cater for new riders on 50s and 125s from experience. And Fowlers in Bristol - nice as it is, it just never seemed as welcoming as GWs in Swindon; though the sales staff in Fowlers are great.

The store(s) here in Swindon are being gutted as I type :( Lorries have been coming and going all morning loaded with bikes and fixtures.

Such a shame to lose GW, but more of a shame that so many people have lost their jobs.

Heard that the main store is being re-opened, but only selling clothes and lids, no bikes... at least, that's the story so far.

Drove past this morning and though something was going on as the main store is full of kit and all laid out.

A little bit of good news, but it's still not sounding good for the ex employees :(
