So, everything finished now.
Thanks to all the help from everyone. I am very happy with the new system and have everything up and running now with only a few problems along the way.
Here is my final spec(for now)

phenom ii x4 965 be @4ghz
asus M4A88TD-V evo 880g motherboard
antec truepower modular 650w
4gb corsair xms3 ram
cooler master elite 430 windowed case
kingston 64gb ssd
samsung bd-rom/dvd rw
arctic cooling 7 pro
2x samsung f3 spinpoint 1tb hdd's in raid0
GTX 470

This system will be fine for me now, and i genuinely do not feel the 'itch' to upgrade anything else, finally.

However, i am aware tha Bulldozer is just around the corner.

So, i was thinking that i would probably upgrade my motherboard to an AM3+ in a few months time, and put my phenom cpu in it for a while and then get one of the new processors at some point.

What do you think of this plan?

another alternative would be to replace the mobo and cpu for a sandybridge set-up, depending on the prices.

Thoughts?

btw. I do have a soft-spot for AMD

I cant comment on what is right for you but i know im never satisfied, my system is (when money permitting) always getting upgraded even if that means a new fan or something bigger.

The system you have now is very capable and should handle everything you throw at it (in fact its an ideal cost/performance gaming build).

As for am3+ or Sandybridge only time will tell, at the moment im thinking i will miss this gen out but i know in 6 months i will find an excuse to go one or the other, the main thing about new tech is that i always wait for the refresh anyway (let the early adopters iron ou all the faults) and i think we are both in a position to to do that with our current rigs.

The only thing with the trikle upgrading method is that even though you spend less in one hit it actually costs more than just upgrading your rig totally every couple of years (im sure i read a thread on here by someone who had done the maths)

I agree, I'm torn between slowly upgrading to bulldozer, or missing it out completely and waiting and upgrading everything in a few years. I can't see any point in the next few years where i would be missing performance in any way.

tbh, i can't see myself needing to upgrade from the phenom for a while, especially for a gaming build. It's just when you start seeing the performance charts, no doubt i will get sucked in.:D

what effect does a motherboard change have on OS and Raid? i imagine i will have to re-install the OS, but i'm not sure about Raid?

If there RAID controller is the same or very similar everything will work right off the bat without a re-install of anything.
