So the Mrs and I decided we'd get a Wii for our daughter this Christmas. I was told by a sales guy in Game today that production has stopped and Internet searches have confirmed this.

So my question is is it still worth buying one? The likes of Argos still have some in stock.

Or do we go for Wii U instead?

Is the gaming experience the same? Not keen on the tablet controller thing. We want to keep things simple.

The Wii has been dead for a while, Nintendo have also turned off a lot of the online services, not that they were much good in the first place.

Definitely go for the Wii U, it's superb and as a better catalogue of games than either PS4 or XBone.

Don't get freaked out by the gamepad - it's just a regular console with remote play.

Wii.games play on the Wii U too.

Yeah the Wii U practically has a Wii built-in, all Wii games and accessories can be used. Even many Wii U games can be played with Wii controllers on Wii U (check compatibility per game).

The Wii U has some new games that are similar/sequels to Wii games, such as Wii Sports Club, Wii Fit U, Mario Kart 8, Smash Bros.U, Super Mario 3D World and New Super Mario Bros.U to name a few.
Wii U games look much better than Wii games, as the console is "HD".

The tablet controller is much like a regular controller but with a screen in the middle of it, which is great for playing games when the TV is in use. There are a very small number of games that require use of the GamePad Screen (Nintendoland, Deus Ex, WiiSports Club - Golf, and some levels in Super Mario 3D World). Generally though, you can use the GamePad as a controller and just ignore the screen. It's simple enough to use don't worry.
The battery life of the GamePad is around 3hrs, but you can plug in the charger cable while you play.

Besides the fact that Wii controllers (Wiimotes etc) can be used with many WiiU games, the official 'extra controller' for the Wii U is the Pro Controller (with a battery life of up to 80hrs per charge):

The Wii console and Wii games will obviously be cheaper than Wii U. Wii games were much about the motion/waggle controls, Nintendo are moving away from that with Wii U, but there's still some Wiimote focused games available on Wii U like Wii Sports Club and Wii Party U. But again - all Wii games can be played on WiiU.

Hope this helps and good luck!

yup wii u is definitely the best this generation for family fun.

got all three current consoles and the wii u gets the most use in our house even with gta5 being launched

The Wii U has won 2014 hands down imho.

2015 we have xenoblade, splatoon, yoshi, kirby, starfox, fast racing neo and zelda u.

BRING IT ON!

Thanks everyone. Just been doing some digging around on the Internet but you guys have answered all the key questions.
Most importantly, the Wii U can be used as a Wii with Wii games and controllers (inc. the balance board). The fact there's a more powerful console there too is a major bonus (mostly for me!).

We already have an Xbox 360, PS3 and PS4 under the TV. Rarely get used - except to play DVDs/BR movies. However, when we visit friends houses who own Wii consoles the kids flock around them, hence the post to get some questions answered.

Can't believe how out of touch I am, was shocked to hear the Wii's production has been stopped. Thought the sales guy was just trying to sell me a Wii U. Should be more trusting!

Pick up Wii Party U - it includes a free wii remote, perfect party game (you'll need another wii remote though).

Two camps on that - some couldn't care less and just run a USB drive or USB stick - others prefer the larger inbuilt drive and will pay a premium for it.

Your call - it's just down to preference really. The 32gb is black and includes a few niceties, the basic is white and doesn't. They both play games the same.

Personally I have the 32gb but that's because I needed black because tv and blu-ray etc is all black.

HAS to be black. All existing consoles + TV/Sky box are black(ish). Can't have white, so that's made the decision for me! Easy.

Thanks again.

Even then, buying a Wii for Gamecube backwards compatibility is fun and games these days. You pretty much have to buy second hand as Nintendo removed backwards compatibility years ago now. Then you have to make sure it has GC controller ports on the top. These Wii's tend to sell for a bit more. May as well just buy a Gamecube now TBH.

I think I might buy a Wii U after Christmas. It's had a really strong year and as already said, the game line-up is looking a lot stronger than XBO/PS4. The Witcher 3 is pretty much the only 'next gen' game I'm excited about right now, and I'll be buying that on PC.
