No need for separate sound card for gaming when you own a 4870x2 ?

I would like some decent sound for gaming through some speakers and my headphones. I dont want to use motherboard sound as it sucks!, is the 4870x2 good enough or should I buy a proper deadicated sound card ?

The 4870x2 will output sound through hdmi although dont know how you would channel this into headphones etc without having to buy some expensive converter!

I suppose you could put the hdmi into an av amp then you have outputs for speakers and headphones.

In terms of quality i dont know how it goes, see if you can find someone that uses theirs to output sound. But most likely a dedicated sound card would be better as that is what its designed for!

Yeah im quite happy with mine and it goes into a pretty decent hifi setup. Although mine does come with a seperate bernstein audio module :D

Onboard sound is ok, in some cases almost decent but if your gaming you really should be looking at the x-fi series. The asus xonar is excellent for music and movies but for gaming the x-fi is the better choice.

IIRC the extreme audio is basically a trumped up audigy 4, you really want the gamer or titanium.

I used HDMI with the onboard sound once...hated it...so went back to using my X-Fi Xtreme Music card...u can definitely tell the difference...until Creative or someone else makes HD sound cards...I am sticking with my X-Fi :D

But If I connect my 4870x2 to my AMP via HDMI and play a movie there will be sound wont there ??

Yes, but the sound isn't decoded by the GPU, it's still coming from the onboard chip. I don't know how HDMI works if you have a sound card, but honestly, unless you're connecting to a TV, you don't usually output sound through HDMI, and if you're connecting to a TV, the speakers aren't that good anyway, so there'd be no point in a sound card.

The realtek audio chip on the 48's is fine. It outputs in PCM, so the quality really depends on the amp/dacs you feed this into. Apart from it being a little quiet, the output quality is actually pretty decent when connected to a decent amp, and has been serving me well for the last 6 months or so, I sold my X-Fi Fatal1ty as there was no difference with my amp, bar no crystaliser, the only reason I was using it was for the mic input and front panel.
Mine is set to 24/96 for the record, and sound quality is fine, I believe James Miller uses a similar setup with his laptop so he should be able to feedback as well.

As reference I have it set to 5.1, and all realtek sound modification off (I dont want realtek tampering with the sound!)
