No new fibre orders at new house...

Hi all,

I could do with some advice please!

I have just moved into a new house which I plan to rent for 6 months only.

This creates a couple of issues in that most broadband contracts are for 12 or more months and I expect that I will get stung when leave.

The other annoying issue is that nobody appears to be accepting new orders of Fibre as apparently my local exchange is too congested. I really do not want to be signing up to a 12 month contract for ADSL2 where I can probably only get 5MB...

What would you do in my situation? I do not need a landline phone so I am even considering a dongle. I expect my usage is around 30GB a month but it's difficult to say.

Thanks in advance.

It won't be the exchange that's congested, it will be the cabinet. There's not a huge amount you can do about it if an Openreach line is your only viable option.

Surely you just sign up for a contract for ADSL now and then 'upgrade' to fibre in your next place, taking the contract with you? I can't imagine any decent ISP refusing to take extra money from you.

Contracts can be portable, e.g. Sky will move you to a new property and start a new contract at the next one. VM for example will offer 9 month 'Student' contracts as well, some ISP's offer 30 day contracts but you pay a premium.

I'm in a similar position.
We are moving to Chelmsford next month and when we were looking, part of the requirement was that it had fibre available.
3 weeks before the move and I've discovered the cabinet is at capacity and ADSL will only provide between 2mb-5mb... I'm used to 76mb!

I'm also considering 4G as we don't need a phone line.

It frustrates me that there is absolutely nothing we can do.

Three do 12GB pay as you go sims which are valid for 12 months but I'm not aware of any that provide more, these are normally between £23.45 and £30 but at best you would be looking at about £70 a month based on 30GB useage... thats a lot..

As stated, move the contract with you.

I'm in a new build and fibre was max'd out very quickly. Sometimes an order will become available as other people cancel lines and what not. Keep an eye out and order when it shows as available, it's what I had to do and took a month or so.

I emailed Openreach and got the following back...

Thank you for your email.

You are connected to cabinet 11 of exchange BOREHAM.

We would like to inform you that this cabinet is running out of space and there are no more spare ports available due to high demand of fibre.

We have a plan of increasing the capacity of this cabinet so that we can offer fibre to more customers.

We would request you to keep an eye on our website from September 2016 for further updates on fibre availability in your area.

We always try to provide the updated information to our customers.

We would really appreciate your patience and cooperation.

Thanks & Regards

Pinki

The more 'service focused' your ISP the easier it will be to arrange to move the connection when you move (or indeed, take a month to month contract, though those will usually have a connection fee to cover costs).

Of course, these type of providers (AAISP / Zen etc) tend also to be fair expensive, you get what you pay for though...
