Hi there.
That previous thread about there being no Survival Horror games on this gen, got me thinking about my old favourite genre, the Space Combat Game.
When I originally upgraded from my Amiga to PC in the mid 90's, it was with the Wing Commander games in mind.
As the years went on, the PC had those, and Freespace, and Starlancer, and Freelancer.
I remember on the PS1 some great space combat games... I say I remember, I've forgotten the names, but I remember some, which I totally loved, and had James Earl Jones doing the narration. Damn good they were, in their day.
I remember when I first got the PS2, getting Star Wars Starfighter with it... which "wasn't bad"
Lylat Wars on the N64.... totally loved it.
Got a Game Cube here. Got Star Fox Assault on that. Found it totally brilliant at first, but soon got tired, as couldn't be bothered, at all, with the "running around" parts.
Same with the Rogue Leader games on the cube. LOVE the space combat sections, never completed them, as can't be bothered with the running around parts.
These days, on the PC at least, they seem to be adding more to it... less space combat, and more trading etc.
I want good old dogfighting in space, fast action, good graphics.
Is there anything like that for "this gen" if not out, then in the pipeline?
In the late 90's, I spent a small fortune on a Microsoft Sidewinder joystick, primarily to play these Space Combat games. Playing Freespace / Starlancer on that were some of the best games I've enjoyed.
Guess they're a dying breed?
Like the old 2D horizonal/vertical shooters.
I can spend hours on those.
Super Stardust on the PS3 caters somewhat for this type of thing.
I hope we get more. I'm considering getting Geometry Wars on the PC.
The PS2 had a number of great old style shooters like that, like Silpheed, and R-Type games, and the Gamecube has Ikaragua I'd love to play some more remakes of games like that, but, with next gen pizzaz on screen.
V1N.
EDIT: Oh yeah, it was Colony Wars, with James Earl Jones, that was simply brilliant back in the day.
EDIT2: There it is http://www.vidgames.com/ps/software/colonywars.html Check out the screenshots at the top lol
Wish they'd make a game like this, for current gen consoles/hardware. Gunna have to dig out my Starlancer CDs and see if it'll run on Vista
