No Optical Drives - it's wrong!

Yeah, that's the point I'd add really, if you have to carry about an external SuperDrive and an Ethernet Adapter with you all the time for working in Office environments, then it begs the question as to why they can't just remain inside the laptop, as nothing has been saved because you are still carrying said items.

I'd like to see them offer a MacBook Pro that has retina display along with all the ports, ethernet and superdrive built in.

It will be interesting to see what they do in future regarding that, but I think its been clear for a number of years now that Apple is no longer interested in the Professional market and the home user is their key demographic now.

For the few who need it, its a big inconvenience and a legitimate complaint. Its not really whinging for the sake of it.

But as has been said, if you really need an optical drive then get an external one. When you consider how much a Mac costs, buying even a nicely designed discrete one is peanuts in comparison.

Am I the only one that like's CD's? You actually get something for your money. What about the high street, CD, DVD's BluRay, stores that sell these will cease to exist. Guess I'm just stuck in that past. I know they sell external drives, but how long until they don't exist either. I tend to buy a CD and rip to itunes, just a personal thing really.

Yup, and think of all the people in the papyrus industry who went out of business when books were invented. Nightmare.

CDs/optical disks have largely been superceded for computing use. Most people won't use an optical drive. Those that need them will purchase the USB options, and as long as the USB options are still profitable companies will still make them.

Optical disks are old hat. The only people that still use them are people with consoles and bluray users. Seeing as a mac is neither a console nor bluray player you would have in place of your living room TV I fail to see why apple would continue to include it.

The only time I might consider using an optical disk is for backup, but more often than not I either use a secondary HDD or a USB stick or Google Drive for small files.

Specialists that require CDs can just use the USB CD drives already mentioned anyway.

who uses an optical drive these days, ive never used the one in my macbook pro or gaming PC, its the way forwards. I bet the OP was one of those still clinging to his floppy disks

It bugs me having to carry a CF card adapter to use with the MBP, let alone an external cd/dvd drive as well. Apple's drive to make things thinner and lighter is fine by most of their customers but it comes at the cost of practicality for some people.

What's the point of having a thinner and lighter laptop if I have to carry a bag full of accessories to go with it? Nexus pretty much nailed it with his post. Not everyone wants a retina display or to save a few grams but hey ho we're not where the profits are so will just have to lump it.

I guess if you want an optical drive, ethernet jack and a 9-in-1 media card reader you could always buy a huge Dell.

Except you won't because we both know that the majority of non-Apple laptops are garbage, especially the trackpad. If having to carry a couple of adaptors around is the price for not having a terrible user experience then sign me up for the adaptors.

Well, I've ordered a Superdrive with mine :)

Is that mainly to give clients discs?

I used to be such a stickler for having a physical disk but since moving around a lot i just left my CDs at my parents place in the loft and have just been downloading music since. 7digital is a good place to get digital music, it's cheaper than iTunes and better quality.

If i want the quality I'll get the vinyl. It's just an ease of use thing for me now.

Yep, two options... you can cling onto the past like Microsoft do (for e.g. Internet Explorer's nightmare legacy ethos) or cast off old technology and push the world forward.

Get rid of all moving parts I say, solid state loveliness is where its at.

I really don't see the point in CDs and DVDs, we've just sold all of ours as they'd been sitting on a shelf gathering dust. All media we just source from the web and is stored on digital devices, I don't think I've watched or listened to a cd/DVD in years. Very rarely I'll buy a cd if it's not been released online, even then I'll rip it to my hard drive and that's it, the cd will be put on a shelf and forgotten about. I just really don't need disposable media any more.

I have to say this put me off the new mbp, I know there is a optical drive but that's just something else to carry about. I like having a optical drive.. Just in case ha.

You know, you cannot buy a CD at all in Brent Cross shopping centre. That's crazy, and a sign of the times.

i went to Brent Cross shopping centre to buy a CD a few years back but i made a wrong turn and ended up on the M1 North, by the time i realised my mistake id been living in blackpool for 3 years and had become a northern monkey, now the only use i have for optical drive is to use the tray to hold my big sports direct mug full of gravy ;) :D

Yeah, damn Apple for making us part with our money...

Eh? If Apple don't want to meet the needs of the people who still rely on some of the "older" technology then that's fine, we'll just have to buy something else. Its no skin off their nose really as they figured out a long time ago that their customers tolerate form over function design choices.

Its interesting that most people see optical media in the context of content delivery i.e. a "consumption" point of view. I would miss it primarily for content creation.

So you want to force people who have no need for an optical drive to carry one around just for the convenience of those who do need one?

That's not what he saying. He's pointing out that if you need those items then not having them built in a hassle. Surely you can understand that?
