No output to monitor - HELP

Hi all. I turned my PC on this morning only for the boot screen to look slightly "warped" and some of the pixels weren't the correct colour (i.e white text had small blocks of dark grey etc...), Windows booted up but when it got to the login screen there was suddenly no output to the monitor. Upon restarting there was no output to the monitor at all (it didn't show the boot screen) although all other lights / fans / activity etc... continued as normal. Now I'm not entirely sure about this but I had the impression it booted up before restarting by itself. I cleared the cmos and there definitely were no signs of any restart (if there was at all in the first place) but there was still no output to the monitor at all.

Unfortunately I haven't got any spare parts (the ones I do have are all older stuff) to test and can't take it to get looked at as my local PC place is shut due to the snow so I was wondering if anyone could provide any help or suggestions as to what could be at fault?

Cheers

One part you could rule out without expense is the cable - very unlikely, but if you've no other replacement bits to work with it's worth a try, if you've an old monitor cable lying around?

Managed to find a DVI to VGA adapter to use a different cable. Got an output although the initial boot screen had a lot of short horizontal white lines in equal width coloums on the black background. Choosing to start normally resulted in a blue screen. Starting in safe mode I removed the display driver and restarted. Windows loaded (albeit with the same short horizontal white lines in equal width columns on the black background), logged in, it automatically installed a display driver dated 11/1/10 and prompted a restart. Before doing so I tried to get it to recognise some USB devices and it refused to do so. I restarted the PC, booted normally but just as it got to the login screen it showed a blue screen with the following info before restarting:

Attempt to reset the display driver and recover from timeout failed.

Technical info:
nvlddmkm.sys (and a lot of blurry letters from trying to get a photo of the screen)
