Where to begin.

I spent 3 months saving up for a system, buying bit by bit. My hard work and effort paid off at the end of September when I was able to purchase my last item.

First things first, here is the spec.

MSI X99A Krait.
5820k
4x4gb Panram Ninja DDR4
XFX XTR 750w
2xold 120gb vertex ssd (going to replace eventually)
Corsair H110 GT
NZXT H440
KFA2 980Ti HoF.

I have the CPU overclocked to 4.5Ghz, idling at around 32-36 depending on ambient.
I have a very small OC on gfx. 70mhz core, 245mhz memory.

All was going well until last weekend. I was playing Fallout 4 and the computer just flat out crashed. Had to hard reboot...thought it was weird. Temps all looked ok.

After a reboot, I started with Fallout 4 again and after about 5 minutes another crash.
Tried a hard reboot.

Fans spin, stuff lights up, no display to monitor.
Tried all kinds of stuff, reseated the gpu, reset cmos, tried different ports (hmdi/dp etc)
Nothing!

Borrowed a lowely Amd 7770, managed to get back into the desktop and whilst it wasnt suitable for gaming, i figured it must have been the gpu.

So the GPU was sent back on RMA last Tuesday.

Fast forward to tonight, a friend offered to lend me a 6970 until my RMA arrives..which I thought was great because I can play some more Fallout 4.

Same story...cannot get the card to display an output..tried all the same stuff as above...nothing.

Worse thing is ...now I cant even get the 7770 to work!

I've tried different ram combinations. I don't have any other PCI cards in the machine...so the only thing i can think of is mobo or psu.

Is there anything im missing here?

Have you tried a different display cable? Another HDMI cable? From what you have written, you've more or less ruled out most of the likely issues already. Unlikely to be GPU as tried various. Reseatted everything. Only thing you don't seem to have changed would be the display cable and the display itself. So the likely culprit I would imagine would be one of the two. Since the display cable is easier to obtain cheaply, I would suggest trying a new cable first.

Technically I suppose it's possible. But I have tried both hdmi and DP, so that would mean both of those cables are faulty.
I have a bunch of HDMI cables here, so I can try another to be sure.

Oh and I'm using the display right now (and HDMI cable) to type this via the Xbox One - yeah thats right...the XBONE....SAVE ME PLS :D

Well i've reset the cmos a bunch of times so that would have reset the overclocks.

Just tried the battery method. No dice.
I think I'm going to RMA this board.

As for the 420w...it should be fine.
The 980Ti is off for RMA remember so it doesn't have that to power.

It was literally just the 5820k which has a tdp of 140w, and the 6970 which has a tdp of 200-250w...so it's borderline for sure...but it should work. And those TDP's are at full load which obviously isn't normal behavior when posting.

So to clarify, i seem to have ruled out the gfx, and psu.
Leaving Ram/CPU/Mobo as possible culprits.
I have tried the 4 sticks of ram one by one, so it seems unlikely that all four are faulty.

leaving CPU/Mobo.
On the mobo front, there is an indicator light
Green=Bios 2
Blue =Bios 1
I've noticed that both light up..now it's possible that this has always been the case and is normal practice for this motherboard...I just don't remember seeing them before.

For anyone interested, I'm still sans pc.

OcUK replaced my gfx card from stock. Same problem.
SCAM still have my motherboard so I bought a new one. Same problem.

So to recap, i have replaced the motherboard, psu and gfx and still no post.

So i decided to rma the cpu last week.
I have got to say that Intel do RMA's right...hands down the best experience.

Called them on Friday 4th, they raised an RMA.
DHL collected CPU on Tuesday 8th.
It arrived in the Netherlands on Wed 9th.
Thursday 10th (today) Intel emailed me confirming they were sending a new one out.
Just had delivery confirmation for tomorrow.
So 7 days turn around (Technically 3 days if you count from when DHL collected it) , including a weekend and it had to go to the Netherlands...seriously impressed.

Here's hoping it actually fixes it.

Well the new CPU fixed it.
I'm now on my pc...finally only took 21 days.

I never really suspected the CPU because they don't fail that often...at least not in my experience.

Oh well, I can now finally play fallout...which is why i bought this new pc in the first place lol
