Hello, i'm struggling to use my TV or a monitor as a second screen to my MSIGT62VR laptop with a 1070.

It used to work fine but now on whatever monitor I plug it into I get a "no signal" message. I have tried 2 standard monitors and 1 x Sony 4K HD TV. As well as this I have tried 5 different HDMI cables. I know the cables and the ports on the monitors/TV are serviceable as my PS4 and partners laptop work with these ports/cables.

I've done all the standard stuff regarding the windows and Nvidia settings. I've done hours and hours of googling but unfortunately nothing seems to help. The Nvidia control panel does see the display, but unfortunately no output - tried all resolutions/refresh rates etc etc.

I have updated the BIOS/EC and Nvidia drivers. Unfortunately its still the same. I have discovered that if I set the display from the HDMI port on the laptop to 800x600 then I DO get a picture on the screen, although its a tiny 800x600. Any resolution other than the one stated just gives me a blank screen with writing along the lines of "No signal, check the external input". This is on a 2017 Sony Bravia 4k TV, which i've confirmed all the HDMI ports work up to 1080p.

Under NVIDIA settings it can see the 'SONY TV' as a second display. Under 'View HDCP status' it states that my craphics card and display are HDCP-capable.

I would have suggested your laptop was pushing out a resolution that the tv can't handle, but it looks like you might have tested that. It might be using a refresh rate the TV can't handle. Have you done windows display settings->detect ?

Yup I've tried that. The TV can handle 120hz I think, but I've tried it at 60/59/50/48/40hz and still the same. The native for the tv is 4k.

Does the laptop have shared video memory or does the 1070 have its own? Check in the BIOS and give it more if you can to see if that helps. Its a 1070 so my initial guess is its not shared.

I'd imagine the 1070 has it's own? There are no options in the bios to change any video memory. The laptop always uses the dedicated 1070, it doesn't have the option to ever use an onboard gfx card.

Fresh install of Windows hasn't seemed to help. I can still only display 800x600 on anything that's connected to my HDMI port

I had a look at Sony KD-49XE9005 i-manual, there not much details about PC resolutions.

Try plug in cable in other HDTV's HDMI ports and see what happen.

Try resets all PC screen settings on HDTV to factory settings.

Try update HDTV to latest firmware.

Yup i've done all that. Just got a new HDMI 2.0 cable and it's not helped.

Under Nvidia settings it always shows me what device i have plugged in (Samsung Monitor/Sony TV etc etc) and it says its HDCP-capable, but I get no image.

do you have a display port on the laptop you can try via display port to hdmi or even a usb-c to try usb-c to hdmi? what model is the laptop?

NO it doesn't display on the laptop screen and an external monitor while in the bios.

Im pretty sure that the bios would only display on the laptop screen anyway?

I just installed Windows 8.1 from an old disk I have. It still doesn't work.

I guess it's hardware then :(. I still don't understand how, it shows the monitor/tv connected on Nvidia settings and if I go 'extend' then I can move the mouse onto another screen, it just doesn't display.
