hope this is in the right section because i have no idea what part is faulty.

i have a 3 year old rig: -

Asus A8V delux Rev 2 mobo
AMD athlon X2 4.4
WD Raptor HDD's on OS
Crucial Ballistix x 2G Ram
Sony LCD monitor
Tagan True 480W PSU
Asus AX 800XT graphics
Asus Zonar Soundcard
Logitec G15 usb keyboard

Problem

i was simply playing Mame games just before Xmas, the rig locked so i had to press "reset". ever since then i got "no output signal, going to power save" on the monitor. i also noticed the keyboard didn't lite up at all and neither did the mouse (all usb). for the 1st time i noticed no bios beep when i turned it on but in all honesty, this rig i am using does it but i now cannot remember weather my other rig ever did or not.

as i had recently had problems with the mobo on it: - usb card decided not to work even though it was installed correctly and worked on this rig afterwards. i had also lost the PS2 ports about 2 years ago. so my assumption was the mobo had packed up. no bios screen, no beeps , nothing but everything lit up inside & HDD's spinning.

i got another identical working mobo (at least that is what i was told) swapped all the gear over..same problem.

now realising i was an idiot not to check everything else 1st instead of jumping to conclusions i now systematically checked parts.

i swapped the graphics card for a working one..same fault
i swapped monitors and leads..same fault
i swapped PSU...same fault

i now have no further knowledge. the only thing i havn't changed is the CPU. can anybody explain how the system works from here? if the CPU dies surely i still get a bios screen from the mobo?

any suggestions plz?

Sounds like a dead CPU or Mobo.

If the CPU is dead this is the kind of thing that would happen. Id say chances are CPU. Luckily these old chips are pretty cheap so you could pick one up second hand and test.

Might be worth trying it with one stick of RAM at a time, just incase.

thanks guys.

i checked each stick of ram individually..same problem. as i have already changed the mobo i will assume you are correct and say it must be the CPU then.

dam!!! never seen or heard of one dying before. off to find a replacement, hope they are a lot cheaper than what i paid for it orginally

now i am totally baffled/screwed.

my old man has the same mobo as me. i took my CPU up there and dropped it in his machine, it woke up and recognised the chip instantly and worked a treat.

so to sumarise: -

i have tried two identical mobo's here..same problem
i have tried all sticks of ram individually..same problem
i have tried a stick of ram from another machine...same problem
i have changed the PSU..same problem
i have changed the graphics card..same problem
i have swapped the monitor...same problem
i have swapped the lead..same problem
i have proved the CPU works as well

i still get No video output/mouse/keyboard but everything lights up on start and the HDD's spin up.

any suggestions because i am at a total loss and no pc

sounds like something is shorting to me, try booting your pc on bench with only the bare essentials connected, this happend to me a while back my pc wouldn't boot in case but booted on a table.

It took several attempts at refitting before i figured out that my heatsinc was shorting the motherboard. iirc I had a similar motherboard to you

ok SuperBoB, good idea i'll keep and eye on yours too.

harris1986, if this helps, i am thinking the same now, i just happened to notice that, WITHOUT HDD's connected the hdd led is permanently on but dimly lit. it stays that way until i hold the power button for 4 seconds. in the instant it shuts down the led goes bright. not sure if that is relavent but i am now going to try using this pwer and reset button from this case to power my rig in situe. if that fails then i'll build it on the bend to see.

i'll just post this incase it ever helps anybody else.

i found out this morning what was wrong.

the very 1st thing i actually did with it was to take the graphics card out and put it into this machine, it worked perfectly so i knew it wasn't that. the stupid part was, because i had proved the graphics card was working i didn't put the card from this rig into the faulty one.

having tried everything i could think of and all suggested on here i sat with it in bits on the desk. powered it up with bare essentials. same problem. just before i launched it into the garden i thought i would give it one more try and systematically go through the whole process again from scratch.

i took my graphics card again and put it in this rig..........

OMG!!!!:mad::mad: it didn't work this time :mad::mad:

pulling and pushing and pressing it came on, i have a dry joint on the pcb output. bloody intermittent fault, no wonder i missed it.

lesson to learn, try everything twice.
