i have a water-cooled HD4870x2 that i think might have died.

I have had a run of graphical glitches over the past week. then my PC started failing to boot.

reset CMOS and could only boot into windows in safe mode (graphical glitches and BSOD) in normal mode.

noticed that windows had done an update to put it down to windows deciding to install a dud driver. so restored to few days ago, installed correct driver.

everything was fine for a few days. then same again, this time I looked at re-setting the card to insure it was in the slot ok. kind of got it working after a few attempts restarting CMOS, pulling the power cable out etc.

now i can only periodical boot into windows. most of the time it wont post at all (no beeps from speaker).

on the occasions i can boot into windows i get graphical glitches etc 98% of the time, the other 2% of the time it crashes after a while. if boot into safe mode eveything looks ok but then on reboot i get no display and no beeps. this confuses me as the card was working less than 10 seconds ago?

if i remove all power from the card i get beeps that corresponds to "no GFX detected" and then"component failure". if I put the power back in and remove the memory i get the beeps for "no memory detected"

so i think the motherboard is ok. and maybe the card is dead?? have completely removed my overclock and still no joy.

don't know why the card would have died, and it works ok in safe mode? will be getting another GFX card to test the motherboard in he next few days

full system spec

p6x58d-e
i7-930 2.8GHz
Corsair XMS3 6GB (3x2GB)
750W Corsair Modular PSU
2x75gb raptor (raid 0)

Quick update: have managed to boot into windows 7, install up to date drives. even played a bit of HL2. so the card must work. only have 2GB of ram installed. am going to try and reboot and see if it still works

The temps are ok I assume?

I've been through something similar recently and it turned out the GFX card was dead. I experienced the exact same thing of being able to get into safe mode and occasionally into Windows without issue, but after a few days the thing just conked out altogether. I picked up a new card and all seems to be going smoothely now.

got it working a few times (completely random) in-game temps are fine. don't go above 40C. its starting to annoy me this works then doesn't work 20 seconds later.

been reading up on the LED on the back of the card.

(R753) 6 Pin power unplugged
(R724) 8 Pin power unplugged
(R819) Overheating (Thermal issue)
(R323) GPU-1 (Master) No power
(R570) GPU-2 (Slave) No power

first three flash on (I believe this is the cards own POST) during start up then non show.

UPDATE

90% sure its the GFX card. just was able to boot into win 7 and ran furmark multi GPU. crashed in 2 seconds.

hummm. don't think I can RMA it as its second hand, and i have had a water block on it.

ahhh the good old oven bake trick! worked on my iphone too!

lol

read up on the night i brought a GTX470 as a replacement.

didn't believe it would work so i dint take photos. been stress testing it for almost 2hrs now and temps not going above 25C in my cold shed.

don't know what to do with the new card?

Sell the 4870x2.

Buy a decent cooler for the 470.

Consider picking up a 2nd hand £10-15 gfx card so you have something to work as a test part in future.

wouldn't feel right about shifting it without highlighting the fault. and then i don't think i would get enough back for it.

ouch baked it in the oven, well i have heard and read about it also, but my oven cost me a lot and i wont want to kill my oven over a gfx, for no one, unless i have a warranty inplace.........lol

"Currys my oven died after i baked my nVidia Graphic card at 180.c, i thought i was a cake"

just Member Market, you been here long enough to know there are always hungry people out here who want to buy a card and the GTX 470 is not a bad card at all
