****fixed reset switch on case

Just got a bunch of new parts for a build for somebody, here's the specs:
-Intel core i3 530
-Gigabyte GA-P55A-UD3
-4GB patriot sector 5
-Artic cooler freezer 7 pro rev2 with MX2 TIM
-Corsair VX 550w
-XFX ATi 5770 XXX
-2x Samsung dvd drives
-2x WD caviar blue 500GB

I think the motherboard is the cause of the problem and might be faulty

So I finished building, plugged in, had a bad feeling something would go wrong and it did! Pushed the on button and the fans spinned up as well as normal lights (mobo phase lights) flickered on and hard/optical drives, however this was for about 3 seconds, no display image, no beeps and it just stopped, then after 5 seconds it would try again and do the same process. I have to disconnect from the mains or use the PSU switch at the back, otherwise it will just keep looping.

What I've tried

-All fans work

PSU:
-Leave for a while and try again
-Replug and check over all power cables
-Power is getting to the parts because the fans spin up etc
-Try at different mains
-Try with no surge protector

CPU:
-Check contact between motherboard pins
-Checked underside of cpu
-Reseatted heatsink

Mobo:
-Make sure socket pins for cpu are not bent/damaged or missing
-Check all power and data cables are connected
-Take out CMOS battery
-Checked for physical damage

RAM:
-Used a single stick
-Tried in 2 and 4 slots

GPU:
-Replaced with a 4850, no change
-Used no dedi gpu, no change

HDD's and optical drivers aren't required to POST and get to the BIOS screen, so can't be the problem and they do spin up. The only other thing I could try is some different RAM and a different PSU, it could potentially be the CPU but surely the motherboard would have given me warning beeps/lights etc for these? I have used google and found a couple of similar cases (not exact but near enough) and the problem has been the mobo

Any suggestions would be most helpful, this is my last hope, I want to make sure it is definitely the motherboard before returning

Cheers guys

u sure uve got all the PSU cables connected to the board? Some boards require additional power connectors? Also, does your gfx card have its own power connector?

how many times did you let it loop? my PC when I first built it a few months back took 5 or 6 loops before it booted properly. now it's only 1. i assume you've left it looping for a few goes?

Have you tried a bench build to make sure the mobo ain't shorting?

No, I will try one today :)

Must have tried about 3-4 times, I'll leave it a bit longer see what happens

Thanks

Ok its not a mobo short, this is bizarre and to be frank quite frustrating, I did a bench build cpu/gpu/psu/ram/mobo/cpu cooler everything worked fine

put it in case using the same parts and it worked, although the cpu fan of the artic cooler F7 pro, only twitched and required pushing to make it spin wtf?? maybe a BIOS setting but anyway on connecting the gpu to the monitor there was no display so couldn't get to BIOS and no mouse/keyboard input

I attach dvd drives no change then I attach hard drives and it does the on/off thing again, so now I have 2 problems

1. Hard drives disconnected, no display
2. Hard drives connected, no display + only turns on for a couple of seconds before turning off for 5 seconds and trying again in a constant loop

Seriously WTH??? anybody ideas?

you are building this thing with nothing unimportant plugged in right? just CPU, gfx card, PSU + HSF + monitor + keyb yeh?

keep it simple and go through each thing one by one. you'll find the source eventually.

OK a bit confused, you said it worked fine on the bench build, but in case it didn't. And you are saying it isn't shorting?

Yeah, found the culprit

yeah I did eventually found it, such a small thing, it was the reset switch connector that goes into the mobo from the front of the antec case I was using. So it must be a bad wire/connection, so I've left the reset button disconnected, not needed anyway

After all that, it was just the reset swtich doh -.- oh well at least it's working :D

Yeah, found the culprit, no it wasn't shorting
