Hi guys,

Woke up and went to boot this morning and found no power going through the pc. Tried swapping out power cables and even tried other sockets in the house. Still no even a light on the mobo is coming on...

Before anyone asks, my PC was unplugged last night for the storms so I've ruled anything linked to that out.. but I'm very worried the power supply is dead, although I find it hard to believe given it's a brand new superflow 1000w.

Any suggestions of things I can do to try diagnose the problem? My luck just keeps getting worse.

You could try the paper clip test below, just to rule out a possible faulty motherboard:

I was getting some quite varying volts according to my fan controller readings, coupled with boot issues where some of the drives didnt show up everytime.. would that indicate an existing problem with the psu?

I would prefer to test the voltage with a multimeter but what your describing could be a faulty PSU, its a case of going through the motions of testing different parts.

Do you have a spare PSU you can test in your machine.

Slight problem ive found is that the superflow cables are all black, I can't see the colours of wire in order to make sure i connect to green + black for the paperclip test

From the side with the clip facing down towards the floor count in 3 pins from the right and the green and black cables will be the fourth and Fifth pin on the bottom row.

Look at the connector from the front, so the wires are pointing away from you and the clip is on the top.

On the top row, 4th from the left is the green wire. You need to jump this with either the 3rd or 5th (it doesn't matter which, they are both grnd.

Just to be sure:

Was going to try plug just a fan in, as i heard sometimes they need something small drawing power? Only thing is i just realised that ive got no easy way to get a fan hooked up looking at the cables ive got. Anything else i can plug in and try that's fairly small, or do i not need to do that?

Least we know the PSU starts and does provide some power, try connecting it to the pc again but try a CMOS reset and use one memory stick and integrated graphics.

This is not looking good. If i bypass the mobo and everything else is plugged in and i fool it with the paperclip, then everything powers up. If i actually connect the power to the motherboard and try and boot.. nothing.

Are you using the case power switch or the one on the motherboard?

Have you tried a CMOS reset?

Do i hit the cmos reset button once power is on, or while its off? Appologies for the silly questions, never had to do this before
