So I just ordered most of a new PC. Here is what I bought:

So I just put it all together inside my HAF932 case and I thought it was all set, then when I turn it on nothing happens. Absolutely nothing.

Now I have done this before, though it has been a while so it is possible that I may have done something wrong. However I have connected the 24 pin power, the 4 pin power for the CPU, both the GPU power cables and 1 cable each for my optical and hard drive.

I have connected the front panel as well. I know I have put them all in the right place. However there is one wire I have not seen before and which is not present on my case. This connector is called: MSG/PWR (message/power/sleep). Could not having this be connected be a problem? Is there any way to test the power switch (what would happen if I connected the reset button to the power would pressing reset turn it on or would it break stuff)?

---

I have tried my old PSU which was enough to power up my old broken motherboard and exactly the same thing happened.

I am about to test using only 1 RAM stick and after that using only the on board graphics.

---

If anyone has any ideas at all then please enlighten me.

Different RAM sticks in different slots no difference.
Using on board graphics having disconnected the GPU, no difference.

What sort of things could cause absolutely nothing to happen when you turn on a pc?

PSU turned off at the back? Silly I know but easy to miss.

Power cables for front header in the right place on the board?

I assume there is no LEDS on the board on?

Double check all front header connections, connecting the reset and power wrong would not course
issue.

Also, try a CMOS reset.

Yea I have triple checked the wires for the power switch, LED etc. I have also tries the PSU with the power switch in both positions :P

I just reseated the CPU as well. I also just tried using the battery from my old motherboard just in case, it was no good. You are correct no LED or anything, it is literally just like the power switch is broken.

Is there any way to power it on by some trick in case the power button is borked?

I will try resetting the CMOS by taking the battery out for a few mins.

So what you reckon is likely? Bad motherboard? If we assume that I have put it together correctly and that the PSU works (different PSU had exactly same result). Given that unplugging the GPU had no affect and also that no RAM had no affect. Is it not the only possibility?

Ive said this a few times tonight but in this case it applies, google PSU paperclip test, and you'll be able to test just the PSU to see if thats at fault.. Just be careful! ;)

Yea I know about that but since I tested with the other PSU (which I KNOW powered on yesterday) I would rather not endanger my life! :p

Well taking the battery out for a few minutes to reset the CMOS achieved nothin.

Sure I could test the PSU with some paperclip testing but really, the other PSU from my broken PC powered up the broken motherboard just fine yesterday, it makes no sense that it would now suffer from the exact same issue as my new one.

I am pretty sure it is in fine. All the screws lined up and everything. I will check the IO. Would it shorting damage components? Also would it result in this effect?

I just rebuilt it in case of one of those problems was the case.

Turns out either my front panel USB or HD audio being plugged in stops the whole thing operating...

I now have power :)

Hopefully from here on in there will be no issues. Thanks for all your input! Special thanks to the guiy who said it might have shorted or I would have never tried rebuilding it one last time!

those cables themselves might be shorting at the pcb end or something.

I had an I/O plate short with my msi board that gave me a zap but didn't harm the board. Just messed the sound up.
