It's been a while since I built a PC so I thought I'd go slow and steady, but unfortunately I've hit issues that may be due to my lack of knowledge or it could be non-working component(s) - I'm not sure which.

I've got a gigabyte Z77 mobo and I've mounted it and put a PSU in - Antec high current gamer 400W. I've attached the two motherboards power cables (btw - is there any reason why the 4+4 has two cables but there's only one socket on the motherboard, or do some have 2 of these?) and one case fan, but when I power on I get nothing.

Questions: -

1. Can I power up the PSU without anything attached, or are they designed to do nothing when not connected to a mobo.

2. Do I need the CPU in, or should the PSU work anyway.

3. Is there anything else I need to check? I've checked the PSU by just plugging in power and turning on, but still nothing. I;ve also checked the PSU manual, but there's no special instructions.

Anybody an ideas?

Some motherboards have 8 pin for CPU power and others only have 1 4 pin as well as the 24 pin ATX connector. You just leave the extra 4 to one side.

When power the PSU I always attach a fan to one of the molex connections.

If you want to start the system without the up then I think you will run into problems, ideally if want to test the PSU link the pins on the ATX connector.

Try a CMOS reset and check all connections are tight and that the case power button works.

Could you list the full specs.
