Hey guys - can we have a poll please mods.

I'm building a website for a music promotions company, which will have a community element to it (search/ add/ view friends mailing etc)

and one of the guys in a different department (who for some reason thinks he has authority over me) says that all users should be able to view each others profile even though there is no tools to hide the users private details like real name.

I've tried explaining to him that we have an obligation to ensure the data we hold on the user is secure and that the user has the facilities to hide any personal data held on them due to the data protection act but he just tuts me

I tell him that I would never register on a site where my information is available to the public to access and he says "well your opinion doesn't count"!!!?? I then proceed to tell him that as a user of the site and the obvious fact that I am building it and I am the project manager of the whole website and staff that work on it - my opinion counts.

So I was wondering - would you register on a web site knowing your information wasn't secure if the service they provided was below "average" - the details being held are first and last name, city, country, picture.

btw this is part rant/ part query

No.

The user should be able to turn off first, last, city country, and picture, although converesely there should be an option to turn it on (At the users discretion). It doesn't matter about screenname, as that is often not linked to any identifiable information.

In general, no, I'd skip it. There are lots of music related communities which probably have more members, better community and allow information to be kept private.
However, if I had a valid reason for needing to register to this site, I would simply use a false name and not put up a picture.

No.

The most information a non-store website registration should require is email address, username, password. And none of that should be available to other customers. End of.

You already know the answer, so this isn't really a query as much as a rant, is it? You don't need a poll to tell you that you shouldn't make all your community members' public details available to anyone who registers; this is common sense. Yes, the "guy in a different department" is an idiot - go tell him :)
