I bought an "item" for £30 last September, and it has just stopped working so after posting it back to the company, I was told that they no longer sell the product I originally bought. I was told the following:

Dear *****,

Unfortunately we no longer stock this item. Please select another replacement or if you prefer we can send a voucher to shop at your own leisure.

I went to their website, and chose the closest matching product, and was told that I would have to pay the price difference, or if I went for the slightly cheaper item then it would be free (with no money refunded).

Is this fair/right?

I'd say not.

I know what route I'd be taking and it'd involve me getting very very stubborn. Either they refund me, replace the item with an identical one, replace it with a cheaper one and refund the difference or dependng on how much it was I'd pay the extra for the more expensive one.

I tend to get very inflexable about these things :)

Is it a forum rule or a personal reason you can't tell us the item? :)

I think it's reasonable for you to demand the equivalent product and not be out of pocket for it. Getting a cheaper item means you would be out of pocket...
