No Routers work on my line

I have tried, Netgear, Linksys and Voayage routers and now a Speedtouch 585(i) v6 wireless router, and nothing will sync with my line. It is a long line and very noisey yet my Voyager 105 usb modem works fine and flawlessy.

The reason i'm after a wireless router is my sis is getting a laptop for xmas and will need access to net to email her friends. With a wireless router i can set it up and leave it on so she can surf whenever she wants, or so the theory goes.

Suggestions please, should i get onto my ISP or to BT ?

About your ADSL, always your ISP. Though if it works with a modem, it's hardly a fault (and you'd probably be more likely to wind up with no service).

Do you get an ADSL light on your router? if so then post us your details that your getting from your router.

If you dont get ADSL light then contact BT as they should have your line ADSL enabled, unless youve been on dial up which i doubt...

1. Do you have sync?
2. If you don't then plug the router directly into the master socket.
3. Now do you have sync?
4. If you still don't have sync then what's your noise margin?
5. Use a Zyxel :D

You only call BT when you can't use the line the make voice calls.
If it's purely ADSL problems then always your ISP.

Also make sure there is nothing else on the line introducing noise, i.e. fax machines, ropey extensions cables etc.
When you test the router plug it into the master socket and nothing else.

Also, wait more then 15 minutes between plugging out a router and testing another one, the ARP cache has to be cleared on the RADIUS server for some ISP's before you use a different device on the line, normally about 10-15 minutes.
Bit of a pain at work when we get a batch of new gear and have to test it all, but it can happen.

Not an issue as this is a no sync problem. Don't limit yourself to testing only wireless routers, if you can get a wired router modem/router working you could couple it with an access point for the wireless side of things.

I came across a very similar issue to this one a few weeks ago. It turned out it was a badly wired extension cable, once it was removed everything burst into lufe with some good line stats as well

Well worth checking any extensions you have + doing the test socket behind the master socket test to rule this out.

Failing that it would be worth trying to get some line stats out of the 105 via the software

Sorry for the slow update, just out from hospital after my second round of Chemotherapy. :( I'll look into this in detail once i unpack and get settled. :)

I have seen some very funky wireing in phone sockets. So a definate test is to unplug ALL the other phones in the house. Then try the router in the master socket again. Could be getting interference from the extensions.

If there is any way of unplugging the extensions - I'd have them out as well. Test the bare minimum. :D

this is to do with the chipsets within the usb modem and routers. usb for some reason seem to work very well with long lines where as routers dont, well some do and some dont. from experience routers like ciscos, netgear and belkin are not good with long lines but if i remeber correctly vigor are very good and can hold the line quite well

Depends on the chipset rather than the interface - the TI AR2s (in the original DG834) were pretty good at one point, and the Cisco 837 uses the same chipset as the Speedtouch 330 USB, so it's a bit of a stretch to label a whole brand as being poor...

Thanks for the advice, the master socket is in my room about 4ft from the pc. Will try it without any phones connected and take it from there.

this is only from my experience

The cable going from the Phone Socket to the Modem...

Check this out... Its a biggie and cures a lot of issues.

The Wires.

Have a look to see if 2 or 4 wires are in the smaller connection.

If its 4, change it to 2 - the middle pins.

If its 2, change it to 4

Alternatively, have a check at the cables that you are using for the Modem and for the routers and see if they have their wires any different and try using the one that you have not tried so far???

Or, as a silly suggestion, you are setting up the routers correctly arent you?
