Hi there, left my pc on last night as windows was installing updates so let it run and shut itself down. This morning I came to turn it on it loaded the welcome screen then just turned off went to turn it back on and it's making all the right sounds the fans turning on etc but nothing on the monitors checked the monitors on by connecting to my dvi port on my laptop both work fine. Disconnected the monitors and reconnected them to get the same message 'no signal detected'.

Opened the case and checked Ll the connections were tight closed it and tried with jus mouse, keyboard and monitors still no luck, gave it a goggle and the too major suggestions were replace motherboard and replace graphics card. Any other ideas or suggestions would be most helpful.

It's a self built pc the board is a P5Q PRO and the card is an ati 4850, windows 7

I'd put my money on monitor settings, the only cases where I got similar symptoms as you describe related to the monitor running on the wrong input setting, as in analog vs digital. Try fiddling around with the settings and changing them when connected to the PC, the fact that it works with the laptop is no indication that the settings are the correct ones for the PC.

When I had this it just started spontaneously, was confused but it turned out to be the above. If not however, my money is on the graphics card, check if its getting enough power, is plugged in tightly, connections fine etc.

as above.

Just one question though.. are you getting anything to the monitor.. i.e. do you see POST scripts, then goes blanks on Windows Load or is it just always blank (amber signal)?

Excellent question, note that my post was based on the assumption that it shows as no signal from the very start. If it works for a moment and goes blank at a specific time during the boot its a tad more confusing.

Hiya, yeah opened the case again and checked all the conections and the power between to the graphics. No nothing shows on the screen when I turn it , and the lights remain Amber on them, something I missed off my previous post when I disconnect the montiors the standby light goes then says cable not connected and then back to amber when I conect them to the pc it says on signal detected and goes back to Amber on the standby light, no post scrips or window loading the screens do remain blank

The easiest way to test this is borrow another monitor from somewhere and test on your system. If that works then it's most likely to be a faulty cable (you have tried another cables haven't you?) or the monitor itself, if it's still a problem, then it's going to be a problem with your unit for sure, possibly video card but at least it eliminates one end of the problem.

conversely, try your monitor on another PC unit.

Already tested the monitors both on my laptop an they run fine, also brand new monitors and cables, going to lump my pc downstairs and try connecting it to the tv, if not would you suggest graphics or motherboard or both need replacing ?

Normally the motherboard should beep if you have no power to the VGA card?
This suggest either memory, cpu or motherboard issue, as the motherboard is not getting to properly initialise, thus not beeping when the vga has no power.

Have you tried resetting the CMOS?
Try removing the RAM and powering up again, this should also cause the mainboard to beep.
