I just bought 2x 5870 used for cheap, and I was about to test them.
Surely, the first gave no signal. At first, it didn't even turn on, the fan wasn't spinning or anything. I shut it down, took it out and put it back in again, now it ran, and the fan went to full RPM at boot, and for some reason, stayed there.

There were still no signal though. Anyone may share a soloution, or just a faulty card?

I then tested the 2nd card, and it worked, although the fan sounded like a mow lawner, but that can be fixed.

Iirc, my old 5870 ran at full blast until drivers were installed. I'm sure you've covered that though :)

They are noisy cards, but I can't say that I've ever heard a mow lawner in action so can't comment on that part ;>

I will just test both again, since, when I tried them the first time, they were pretty cold due to shipping in the cold weather, now they've been laying in here for a few hours.

Otherwise, they're going back :(

Edit: Weird stuff, put in the non working card, it booted and all, installing new drivers now.. The fan isn't even full RPM anymore :O

Edit2: Both now working after warming them up with a hair dryer :)
