No signal until Windows has loaded

I've installed my old 4850 into my brothers computer and I don't seem to be getting a signal on the monitor until Windows has loaded. Its connected to a LG 22LS4D by VGA but is using an adapter to convert the DVI output on the card to VGA. I've tried it on my Dell monitor via the same method and it works fine, can see the BIOS splashscreen all the way through to Windows desktop. Any ideas why its not displaying anything on the LG monitor until Windows has loaded?
 
How odd. New card set in BIOS to be first Display device? although having no bios screen infront of you might be a problem :o
 
Sounds like a driver issue if it's waiting for the OS to load before you get signal. That's my guess anyway, was there any software for the screen? Long shot, but give it a go. I wouldn't have thought it's an ATI driver issue if the dell screen works :/

I think it is, haven't changed anything in the BIOS since removing his old card (ATI 4670), but as it works on the Dell monitor, would that rule it out?

Don't think there's any monitor software (its actually a TV but shouldn't matter). Perhaps its an issue with the resolution its displaying (out of range?) before it loads Windows? Having said that I had no problems with the 4670 that was in it previously which was using the VGA connection.

The other DVI port? Its this 4850 btw http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-106-PC&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=938. It only has 2 DVI ports, I did try both but it didn't display anything on either until Windows had loaded, but I shall try again in the morning. Its not a major problem other than the fact that I can't see to get into the BIOS if I need to.
 
When you have the LG plugged into the 4850, is there anything else plugged into the other port? (eg your Dell)

If you don't then it looks like the it could be the LG display having an issue with the images being sent during initial boot (BIOS screens etc).
 
not a driver issue no driver has had a chance to load at boot up

hardware related maybe a dodgy adaptor or try updating the bios on the card

Most common issue is that its sending the image to the other connected device. But if you only have 1 monitor then that shouldnt be an issue.

Have you tried pressing the button to access the BIOS on boot with the LG to see if it will give you the BIOS modification screen?
 
What TV is it? Chances are it doesn't support whatever resolution is being put out between power on and Windows loading. I used to get this with a Sharp Aquos.

In which case once you're in Windows I'd try setting lower resolutions to see if it doesn't support any in the lower range (i.e. 640 x 480 or 800 x 600). If it doesn't support that resolution let it time out so it resets it back to the previous one.
 
This issue used to happen with my 8800gts320 all the time. I solved it by making sure my TV was off while starting up my PC or unplugging the HDMI from the TV until I wanted to use it. I'm afraid I never did find a way to solve the problem another way.

This is the problem i always have - with three different cards now. :(
 
Thanks for all the suggestions guys. I've connected it using HDMI as gareth170 suggested and its working fine now. Obviously for some reason the TV doesn't seem to respond when using DVI>VGA adapter>VGA connection and yet it works fine when just using straight VGA>VGA connection, like I did with the 4670. Just means I now need to get a longer HDMI cable.
