No sound after installing HD 5770

So I have installed an ATI HD 5770 and both the Catalyst and the drivers including the HDMI ones.

Since then I have lost the sound from my onboard soundcard which is a realtek and there is no sound from the HDMI connecction to which my LCD TV is connected. On which btw I can see the picture.

When I launch an MP3 in windows media player I get an error that Windows Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with my sound card but if I go in the Device Manager I can see both the Realtek onboard sound as well as the ATI HDMI one.

There are no sounds from any application and when I try to test the sound from the Realtek audio manager I get an error that the test could not be performed.

I tried to disable either the HDMI or the onbaord soundcard and do a restart but I still get the same error.

Can anyone please help me as I don't know what else to do?

I have windows 7 installed.

Try this:

Go to the little icon on your taskbar of a speaker, right click it, then click playback devices, highlight the realtek device (if thats what you would like to continue to use), press set default then OK.

Hopefully that will work.

hi

try unistalling the drivers then reinstalling them without the hdmi audio . that did it for me

cheers

I think you have to go into your Sound properties in the Windows Control Panel, and select your onboard again to be used, as its switched it over to the 5770's HDMI.

+1 for this soloution

when installing the ATI drivers they also install sound drivers for the card and they being the last to be installed they become default sound drivers

I already tried that as well but I still get no sound and the same error in Media Player.

I tried to reinstall the drivers several times with different versions and without the HDMI audio but the the HDMI is still present in Device Manger as Windows installs the Microsoft Driver.

In the sound section in the control panel I can see both the lcd screen and the on-board sound card and there are no errors and windows "says" that the devices are working correctly but I still get no sound and the error in media player.

On the realtek device manager it detects when I connect the speakers so I know that the driver is detecting the speakers when I connect them.

Something I've also noted is that when I un-install all the ATI drivers and physically remove the HD 5770 the onboard sound still doesn't work and media player still gives me the same error.

I'm considering to re-install windows but I'd rather leave it as the last possible solution as it's a bit of a hassle to re-install everything.

Have you tried uninstalling/disabling the realtek & trying to configure the ATIs sound? If it's plugged in you may as well try & use it.

Obviously not the best solution but at least it would keep you going...

Having some grief with this myself.

Just installed a 5770 on a Zotac GF9300, onboard sound worked fine before. Just reinstalled Windows 7 and then the ATI drivers minus the HDMI sound driver. Can't see any "Speakers" or "Realtek" sound driver in the sound properties, and in the BIOS I have:

"Disabled, Internal Codec, External Codec, Internal + External Codec"

No option to enable or auto the soundcard. Have tried all 3 of the above options but to no avail. Any ideas?

Cheers

edit - sussed it. Zotac's Realtek drivers on their site are duff, well they may work but they certainly don't with my setup. Pull the latest HD Audio driver off the Realtek site and that worked for me, despite there being no hardware devices missing drivers in device manager. Odd, but hey it works.
